I heard that FFVII was originally planned for the N64...but it would have been expensive to SqaureSoft to manufacture the carts...so they moved to the Playstation...CDs were cheaper to make....

BUT

What if FFVII was for the N64 ?

do you think it would be the same...or had the same effect it has today ?

Thanks for your time.

It would probably better, since the PSX was only a 32-bit system...

Now if we're talking Animal Crossing, it would be exactly the same ::)

On FFVII, I'd probably just expect better graphics, and maybe a few extra features.
I like to glitch old VHS tapes and turn them into visuals for live music events. Check out what I'm working on - www.instagram.com/tylerisneat

No real FMV though.

Plus lol at the thought of a multiple cartridge game :P

It should be a lot faster... DAMN YOUR LOADTIME PSX! Seriously, I think much of the gameplay is lost by the loading times...

Blue Protoman

Depends on the frequency and length of load times.  I.E., for Brawl, it's not much of a problem, IMO.

Wasn't there a mockup video made of an N64 FF game at one point by Square? With all the characters in 3D?

I think there is such a video, maybe even on youtube.

Brawl doesnt have that long loading times as the psx seriously, a normal level takes 5x more the time then a fds game that needs to start up.

FamicomFreak

Final Fantasy VII doesn't have much loading time you know. Have you even played the game? So what if games take sometime to load? You cry over losing precious seconds.....well guess what all new consoles ended up using discs which means yeah loading time!

In the mid 90's, square and nintendo had a bit of a falling out and really didn't want anything to do with one another. Due to much stronger hardware, cheaper development coasts and of the course, CD media, the playstation was the clear choice for the seventh game. An N64 version could not be done, at least not without severe cuts and reduction of quality. CD media allowed games to contain full CD-quality audio, voice acting, cutscenes, longer and bigger games not limited to compression sizes. My personal feeling is that if Final Fantasy VII had come out for the N64, it would have been Final Fantasy VIII for the PSX that would be the one remembered as revolutionary today.

Ask most people what separated the PSX and the N64 from another and the answer you'll most get is The PSX could do Final Fantasy VII; the N64 could do Mario 64.

@Famicomfreak

I was talking about the psx in the main.

son_ov_hades

The N64 actually had the stronger hardware.

Agreed, except for some abysmally small texture cache memory and the limited storage of cartridge media, performance-wise, the N64 kicked PlayStation's ass.
The Dreamcast also runs circles around the PS1 performance wise (a DC can emulate PS1 games at twice the resolution!). In the end the PS1 won because of rampant piracy IMO.
