So it turns out it is a word, but consider this:

- have you ever heard anyone use it? not me and I've studied way more literature than I had sense to.
- this is a game primarily for kids, not phd grads.
- why use a specialised scientific term when the game is about a guy killing underground trias witha  magic wand?

Beats me!  I'd have called it GIPPO, seeing as the guy runs around stealing gold and leading folk astray :)

... No really the term "lode" is used a lot, primarily as Rogles said, in the phrase "mother lode" as in "i hit/found the mother lode!"

Speaking of game names that make us titter like little kids, my 12  year old self always gets a laugh over "Nuts & Milk."

So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...

'Mother lode' made me think of something else I'm afraid!

Hmm, maybe it's a yank thing, I've never ever heard it in my life before, ever :)  I assure you I am educated too, they were always referred to as deposits or clusters even though that's less descriptive.  I must admit science / geography is NOT my forte!

But to keep on track, I never liked the name Castlevania either.  I mean, I do like it and love the game but it seems like a really rushed territory rename.  Take Megaman, that is a great territory rename but Castlevania?  It seems like they just though " Hmm...Transylvania or Castle Dracula?  Heck we'll just mishmash them and be done with it!"

I'm the opposite way: I don't care for the name "Megaman" but I love the name "Castlevania." I think the problem was that they couldn't use the name "Dracula" since it was at the time still under copyright. I think Castlevania perfectly evokes the ideas and emotions they were going for while not using terms that could get them sued. Megaman, on the other hand, doesn't have anything to do w/ the original name, and it seems like a totally arbitrary name change. Rockman isn't a copyright issue, and I like the musical naming of the allies. Rockman, Roll, Bass, Forte... I think that's pretty cool. Megaman just doesn't mean or signify anything in my mind. In fact, it conjures up visions of some enormous dude rather than a little kid.

I thought "Dracula" was legend folk tale or some sort so how could it really be copy-written? MegaMan would make the thought of a guy who has a big **** or something so my first thought on playing it would be different until I would actualy play the any game of the series.

Names are usually not able to be copyrighted fully but let's say there's a movie at the time, then yeah it's a no-go unless you get the licensor blessing (or license it again).

It's not a folk tale per say, as Dracula was a real Hungarian.

Think the vampire bit is made up though :D

Hahaha nuts and milk!

Any chance nuts and milk are a favorite Japanese snack or something. Then it would make sense. Like naming a game Milk and Cookies here in the States.

nensondubois

What exactly is nuts and milk for as a snack (and not the sexual one :D)?

There is a possibility that "Nuts and Milk" could be another case Engrish like "all your base are belong to us"/

Per Wikipedia:

QuoteSet in a fantasy world, Nuts & Milk follows the story of a pink male blob Milk who must find his fiancée, a similar pink blob with a red hair bow, and rescue her from Nuts, a teal blob who also vies for her affection. The journey will take Milk through several levels where the process of finding and saving his love will repeat itself several times as Nuts mounts an ever-present resistance against his quest for romance.

Could you imagine if your name was nuts? "Hi, I'm Nuts!" Just doesn't work. Guess that's why he took to calling himself Mr. Nutz. "that's MISTER NUTZ to you!"

... ok I got nothing.

I'm surprised "Ballblazer" didn't come up yet. Think about that for a while...
