Jedi Master Baiter

That cover has a killer style, but like Strider_Hiryu said, it's not in keeping with the retro design. Hiryu is made out to his Strider 2 look:

No mask:

But I'm a purist. ::) I know; stuck-up, over-analyzing, graphic-design-hat-wearing snob. I say! <- I need to bookmark this guy

Oh I totally agree with the both of you about it being anachronistic in style.

However, the only other Strider famicom carts I've seen to pop up came in a plain white cassette with a plain white label. Sometimes blank. Other times it has what appears to be hand drawn in ink the kanji for Hiryu. I don't have the skill, tools or connections to have a nice box/label/instructions made so this is pretty convenient. Lastly, since I'm predominantly a CIB guy in terms of collecting, this makes it fit in well with the rest of the loot.

Its probably not an actual prortotype, prob just the american rom. Those Japanese rom screenshots are from a different auction I think.

That picture of the screenshots I took from the actual auction. The description of the auction states that those are the actual screenshots from the cart for sale.

well thats insanely awesome then. You might very well have found a prototype turned into a cool custom cart, I highly doubt anyone would hack the American ROM back to Japanese only to release a single cart of it and not spread the rom on the net....

I've been watching this topic with great interest. I too am very curious to know if this is the actual proto made into a repro.

That, and have any proto-to-repro Monster Party carts shown up?

RC2C05-99

I wonder if the FC proto used a different PCB type than Strider NES, or did the seller modify an FC cart to be 'SGROM' type (apparently this type was never used for FC, only NES)?

There are SGROM famicom boards:

you guys need to check out punkpolitical's custom strider labels he just posted in the custom label art thread....

Any new info on this cart surface yet? Is it a legitimate proto or repro that's been customized?

Haven't received it yet. For my yahoo japan auction winnings via middleman service, I usually like to wait til I have completed about 100-150 auctions before I issue a shipment request to my house. So I let it stockpile in their warehouse until I have a "worthy" package. Also saves a bit on final shipping.... since I have to pay shipping three times basically.

Once from seller in Japan to middleman warehouse in Japan, then from Japan warehouse to US warehouse and finally from US warehouse to my door. Sure I could pay shipping direct from Japan warehouse to my door, but having that occur for each auction gets even more expensive. The bulk auto shipments from warehouse to warehouse is cheaper overall.

Plus it's a repro. Question is if the repro is made from a proto ROM image.

Im assuming its  a reproduction and the ROM is the one this guy made, if you translate the page he talks about the entire project, this is a few pages deep, so....

this rom is available on Japanese sites but I have no idea where to begin seeking it out.

Maybe Manuel can find it.  It looks like an extensive hack translation to me, but I'm not familair enough with the US game.
Text, title screen and sprites look adjusted to start with.

As a friend of mine said on another forum:

Quote from: Scion238There'd be a real easy way to know whether this was repro'd from the English or not, actually. The Famicom version used on-screen text rendering, while the NES actually cut to a black screen for characters' conversations. They did this because the hardware could only handle eight text characters onscreen at one time. That limitation is workable in Japanese but not in English.

So... if you see a screencap from this game and it has the kanji overlaid on the game graphics, it's been made from the proto. Most likely.

So what ever happened with this? Was the ROM found, or can we get it dumped from this cart?

Bramsworth

I'm curious now too, since that blog with the JP ROM hack Parodius linked to shows what looks like a different hack.

http://famicomcafe.blog47.fc2.com/blog-entry-101.html

You can see the JP text is more squished and not spaced out like in the OPs shots, plus the titlescreen graphic isn't one straight color either. Could it be the winner of that last Yahoo Japan proto auction is making repros?

Surely OP will deliver and let us know...........  :-\
