What's with the (3)DS and N64 ports?

OoT 3D, StarFox 64 3D, Rayman 3D, Super Mario 64 DS, Diddy Kong Racing DS, and I'm sure there's more. I love the N64, and I'll probably get most of the above games, but has anyone else noticed this?

UglyJoe

You are surely not the first to notice.  The GBA did the same thing with SNES games.

Yeah and the SNES even did it with some NES games.  Before that the NES did it with arcade games ;)

Personally I love it, but I don't think the DS can handle Mario 64 well enough with its d-pad.  I haven't tried it on 3DS.

yeah.. that's how they market old games to new.

If I were to ask. I won't bother to play the game again since I already beat that game on their original platform.

DerZocker

Actually i don't mind to play my old favs on a handheld as long we get the good ones^^
I'd love to see F-Zero X ported to the 3DS (complete with the Expansion Kit and no other musicians than Taro Bando and Hajime Wakai)
It's just too bad we'll never receive any new or old Banjo game on 3DS  :(
BTW SM64DS plays a lot better on 3DS with the circlepad. Even if it's technically still digital, it's way easier to move around or to throw Bowser and the screen-stretching looks pretty good with most DS 3D-games.

I'd love to see a Super Smash Bros 64 3DS edition, the game's just so fucking awesome it needs to be remade.

Wii U's in HD so an HD Remake would be way cooler. ;D

manuel

There's a whole new generation of gamers who didn't play the originals, so in my eyes it's  quite legit to put out remakes.

Yes, thanks to this policy we had the Super Mario All Stars compilation...
It's often also a good opportunity to include extra features etc, like adding Luigi, Wario etc. in SMB64 on DS.

By the way - you won't get an HD remake of Smash Bros 1 on Wii U, you'll just get Smash bros 4.
To upgrade the visuals only, wouldn't really be enough when there's so much more they can do.

That would be killer, and I would actually purchase a 3DS to play that, but I'm unsure how well actual buttons would fare in terms of longevity. :(

You guys saw the announcement right?  New Smash Bros Wii is also coming to 3DS, developed by Namco Bandai (aka Bandai Namco).
Before people get skeptical, I think they are more than capable when you look at Tekken 3DS at 60fps and the arenas.

Multiplayer online games like that are what the 3DS needs I think, it's a shame its so far off though.
It's supposed to be a port of the WiiU game, which is great news.  I think NB are developing both, but I could have misread.

Personally, I'll have no opinion until I see some of the game. I don't think I've ever played a Namco Bandai game, so I really don't know how good or bad they are.

FamicomRetroGamer

Hopefully Spike has absolutely nothing to do with the game or they'll fuck it up somehow like they've been doing for the past Dragon Ball games.

L___E___T

Spike are the publisher/distributor right?  I've worked with them before, they were top guys so I'd have confidence in them.
Either way, Nintendo are publishing and distributing all their first party stuff, so I can't see Spike involved.

Some good games from NamcoBandai:

- Tekken (3D, Tekken 6, TTT2)
- Dark Souls
- Armored Core V (menus are bad though!)
- Soul Calibur sizznat
- Katamari shamalayanari
- Mario Kart GP 2 (which turned out great)

I know Namco also co-developed F-zero GX with Sega and Nintendo, that game turned out to be pretty awesome. Namco is a big publisher though, so you can't be too confident in the quality they produce.

petik1

Nintendo is always careful when handing out their franchises to other companies, and they turn out great. Such as Mario RPG (square enix), Donkey Kong Country (rare) and as said before, f zero gx.
