I started to play "Elite" on the NES today, to my surprise the battery was still good, it even had an old save I made way back. Did some trading, got some upgrades and made "above average" rank. I don't think I'll go for the "elite" rank but perhaps I'll try to complete the missions at least. It's such a great game, highly addicting, especially in the beginning when you're still amidst outfitting your vessel.

I just played some Bio Force Ape (NES) on a repro cart. I'm trying to decide if I want to keep it or not, especially since I owe a collector friend and he's expressed interest in my repro. The game has some technical achievements, mostly in terms of the sheer speed the game moves at on an NES. But the game also feels... unpolished? It just doesn't seem to have a lot going on, in terms of level design and in the rather limited fighting system. What does everyone here think of the game?

I've only played it for a bit, but yeah I don't think it's that special besides from pretty good control and as you say it's very fast. One problem is the characters. It's just not fun at all to be some ugly monkey!

Tried beating Shinobi on Sega Master System. Shinobi III is one of my favorite games of all time, but... wow. This series really got off to a rocky start. Stage 4-2 in Shinobi is some of the worst game design I've ever experienced in a platformer. A jump that's 100% luck based. Classy.

Elite (NES). Bought the Trumbles and quickly got rid of them. Completed the first mission and reached "Dangerous" rank. Now I'm grinding in an anarchy system in the second galaxy getting the kills needed for the second mission.

Darkwing Duck (Famicom), game is great but somehow hard on some levels...

My brother and I just beat that game a few days ago, actually!  I feel the same way, that the game is great and I am glad to have it, but it is much harder than some of the other Disney games.  I love the music though.

Beat Shinobi, after a ridiculous amount of continues. 4-2 still kinda ruins the game for me, other than that it was okay... albeit a rocky start to a beloved series.

I could only beat the arcade game wit have states :)

Haven't yet beat the Megadrive games without save states, the PS2 games, a different story.

Last game I played was Double Dragon - got reasonably far for a first play through but lost some lives figuring out weaknesses, I'll do better next time.

I took a couple of cracks at Silk Worm (NES) with my buddy this afternoon. Both times, we game-overed on Wave 8. We might've beaten the game, if we'd had time for a third playthrough (but we didn't).

One of my favorite games as a kid was King Arthur's World on the SNES. It was a totally overlooked Lemmings/RTS style game by Argonaut. It's totally worth a shot! There's also been somewhat of an homage by the name of King Arthur's Gold which you can find on steam. It's like a multiplayer version of KAW, but with a building phase.  I also talked more about KAW on Retro Obscura Episode 14.

I still need to get Shinobi on PS2, dying to try that one out. But the original Shinobi, man the difficulty is insane. And hell, I'm speaking of the Master System port which added in a health bar. My main problem was how inconsistent/luck-based the jumping in 4-2 was. I have beaten it once more since posting that, so it's definitely beatable... it just requires a ton of  luck, in addition to skill and memorization.
