God, this is so my week. My Ouya finally came. My verdit? It's decent, and it may shape up to be a decent platform. But for now, it's pretty rough. I'll give details if you guys are interested.

Feel free to share and take pictures if you like. Always fun to read about new consoles especially new platforms that are independant :star:

I'll just be lazy and copy/paste the first impressions I posted to another forum:

Got mine today (after DHL held it in their warehouse longer than it took for the package to travel from Hong Kong to Finland...) and I've been fiddling with it for a few hours now.

During my testing I found some games that I felt had zero input lag, as well as games that had either barely noticeable or noticeable lag. So I guess there is something to it on the software side and it is possible to have games that feel really good, controller-wise. I played only with the official controller, haven't tested any others yet. That segues smoothly into the controller itself - I think it might fool some people into thinking there's more lag than there actually is. The d-pad feels very mushy - I can lightly press a direction on it, feel it hit the bottom, but it doesn't register unless I apply just a little bit more force. Otherwise the controller felt alright - nothing special, but gets the job done. Can't really say anything about the shoulder triggers though, none of the ~10 games I tried out used them.

I think the system could be good, but it comes down to the games now. There's not a whole many games for it now, but then, the system's not officially out yet either. Exclusives are good, but as long as the mobile/indie game ports are done right (ie. no lag, taking advantage of the controller) that might be enough. One of the reasons I originally backed the project was because there are some mobile games I'd like to play with a proper controller instead of touch screen controls or tilting the device around. So I'm hoping to see ports of games like Asphalt 7: Heat or an Ouya-exclusive game of the series.

Actually those are just the ones I thought looked fun, I ignored adding anything to the list that looked boring.

"Crest of War" is a FPS in the style of "Call of Duty", it looks massively promising. Actually well rendered, and could be a game that will help the system thrive.

When is the full version of Organ Trail going to hit? Hasn't the demo been up since March?

Most of the stuff in the store right now is just stuff to give people something to do until the real games are released.

I like the idea of the Oyua, but I like the idea of the open android platform more.

I just bought a JXD S7300 for only slightly more than an ouya would have cost.

The JXD S7300 is a 1.5Ghz dual-core, 1GB ram 7-inch Android tablet and portable game console based on android 4.1 and preinstalled with emulators and android games with access to all of the normal android tablet features and options.

It also has hdmi port with 1080p native support for everything.

Also, the thing just kinda sorta resembles a WiiU tablet controller

It's still in the post though, so I have no idea if it lives up to its promise or not - I'm planning on using it to play retro games on. I love my modded original Xbox, and if this turns out to be anything like that, I'll be in heaven.

I do not know... It does look cool though, but it loses the purpose of Ouya.

I don't really understand Ouya's promise - it seems like an Android box that connects to the TV.  You don't need a console for that.

It's capable of cloud gaming for PC games, and will have its own games.

satoshi_matrix

Right. The tablet I just bought is almost as powerful, but it's a self contained console that doesn't need a tv or even another controller - it just can be used with a tv and another controller if you want.

I'm reasonable sure I don't give a crap about the vast majority of android games. If I bought an Ouya, I would buy one to run emulators. Instead, the JXD WiiU tablet will do that and hopefully do that well. A full series of reviews will be forthcoming of course.

L___E___T

Yeah I don't get the 'cloud gaming' so much, plus not sure Ouya will really have its own games.  It seems a bit like an Android box, that dreamt it was a Steambox, but now the dream is over, and the nightmare is real.

I suppose the Ouya could be useful for someone whom doesn't want or cant afford a full fledged android device and just wants to play the exclusive games or develop for Android.

but I can't see why if you own a relatively new Android phone with hdmi out you would want an Ouya.

Take a Galaxy S4 with hdmi out and a bluetooth controller and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  What you get is a portable mini computer capable of emulation, android games, applications, cellular and internet capabilities.
