Thanks to Satoshi I was able to get a head start with some information and he also provided the pixel image of the car I wanted to do. You'll notice I've made some changes based on an actual Ferrari 328 GTS (I realize the RR car is not intended to be based on a GTS, but it is had some GTS to begin with as well [their car is a bit of a Ferrari mutt]. Though I've opted to keep the top red as opposed to black). This is the image I had to work with from the actual game (Rad Racer):

This is one of those games that I didn't originally own as a kid, but my one of my friends had it that everyone wanted to play, but not everyone got to as much as they wanted, thus it became viewed as even better than it is perhaps, but it is certainly one of the best racing games for the NES (IMO), and I have many fond memories of it. I hope to upload the finished product later today (Thurs.). You may get an idea of the size this will be based on the amount of boards (nothing has been ironed yet--and until then, changes may still be made [I am considering US side marker lights, but only have the right color beads for the front--I have removed the small circle one in front of the door]). I notice the dark grey beads look brighter in the photo as well, though I was hoping for something inbetween those colors to look more appropriate--I clearly changed the wheel quite a bit as well, making it larger in the process and switching the wheel emblem to the yellow Ferrari horse (look really really close and you can see it ;D).

EDIT:
Still working on it. Below is my first attempt at fixing the weird look of the original where the roof meets the windshield (looks like something is missing or had been smashed in ???)--some things still look odd (perspective to the rest of the car perhaps) and I shifted everything over a notch in trying to fix it (I'll wait until the rest of the car is done before making the decision to change it again or not--it has been a pain [fixing one problem tends to create another one :-\).

looks good man. something to consider: when you iron it, apply much more heat on one side to the other (I don't iron one side even at all most of the time). The side that you iron will look much worse up close than the side you don't, so something to keep in mind is the fact that the inverse of whatever side you iron will be the better looking side. In simpler words, the sprite you are making currently faces to the left. If you iron it, it will face towards the right. If you're cool with that, by all means go ahead. But if not, you'll want to switch it around. That can be done by pattycaking two boards together and carefully flipping each one and then reconnecting them. Since this sprite will be way too large for standard ironing paper, unless you have special sized sheets, try using parchment paper instead. avoid wax paper, that will melt!
Wow, that's huge!
Can't wait to see the finished car.
Are you trying to compete with S_M?
Can't they just both enjoy the same hobby?
There's no competition.
Unrecognized sarcasm is unrecognized.

I actually do have a roll of parchment paper that could cover the whole thing at once if I so choose (as you say that works [though I did get some of the smaller stuff with the green boards I picked up at the Michael's craft store]). And as you've noticed, I have done the sprite backwards so that the un-ironed side will be the good side (I've seen some terrible iron jobs online and am going about it the way you seem to prefer for the more even and consistent result [and your sprites all look good the way you leave them--I certainly don't want to risk ruining this one as it has taken me a long time]).
Here are a couple more progress shots (I will have enough boards thankfully [I was worried before getting close to the top that the roof might have gone over]):

What's the point? I could never out-do Super Pig anyway ;D
That's a nice sprite...big too! I can't wait to see the finished model. You should make a small business out of this like Satoshi, there are a few people who really like this stuff.
/\ Thanks. Though considering how much time is put into these, I don't see how doing these for money could be in any way profitable. However, after doing some things I want to do, I may consider doing custom projects for people to fund the hobby (it would be fun to do them anyway). If there is interest, then we'll see.
I ended up going to sleep not long after my last post, but the sprite is at some stage of completion now. There are several areas I may still adjust, so it isn't ready for ironing. I know for sure that I want to rethink the rear end as the game sprite doesn't look right at all. I considered posting where it is at as another progress shot, but figure I will wait and do everything once it is done (that may wait for tomorrow now).
Alright, here is one last teaser shot before I do the finishing touches and iron it (I won't be posting the final photos until tomorrow--I'll do a magic trick with it too ;)). You may notice a slight change to the front tire shape as I took some beads out of it from the sprite image (different from my other posted tire pics--the rear was changed in a similar fashion). It is pictured with a US quarter and an NES Rad Racer cart so that you can get an idea of how big this thing is.
Oh my god... It's huge. XD
WHOA!! It's bigger than I thought! Also, nice decision with changing the color of the wheel. It looked a little ...almost...flat in the other picture

I figured that is the kind of response I'd get with the comparison--for someone unfamiliar with these beads, it is impossible to tell how large these things are without something to compare to.
And I believe you meant changing the "contour" as opposed to "color" in reference to making it look less flat ;)
EDIT:Here are a couple my girlfriend did. The green one is from some TV show (she saw someone else had done it when I showed her some things online). On the mermaid, she did the mermaid, then I added the attack swirl and since she had already ironed the mermaid down on both sides, I had to cut off the sides, then I flattened it to some extent to hide the ugliness. I think I prefer it flat, but it warps the job somewhat and would take way too much time time to do it properly.
EDIT #2: I'm about to start something else that will be a custom mix, so I'm not sure how it will end up yet or how big it will be, etc.--hopefully not too massive. This one will involve Lolo from the Eggerland/Lolo games games as well, but I hope to do an actual game shot featuring Lala, but calculated about 16,500 beads for what I wanted to do :o and highly doubt I even have the beads for that right now. I suppose I'll have to place another order soon now as the Rad Racer car took up quite a chunk of my 50k order already (this is getting expensive :P). Thankfully I now have a better idea of what the colors actually are and what I will need most.
Invader Zim's side kick disguise
Here is where I'm at with what I'm doing next:
Having this start, I see that this one may end up being even larger than the Rad Racer sprite--this will be done in a series of scenes (somewhat like a comic book I suppose). It will be Lolo getting harmed by Mario for several scenes in different ways and then Lala coming to Lolo's rescue in the end :P
[clearly the whole thing will be worked out backwards]
Also note that my modified Rad Racer sprite had been completed and ironed last night and I'll take some photos later today and post them by tonight.
Things that were modified from the original Rad Racer sprite (for those that care/are interested :P):
-The bump behind the roof was removed (I don't know if that was supposed to be the spoiler or not, but it didn't look right to be so I removed it, and also opted against adding the roof spoiler as I didn't think it would look right with the limitations).
-The area where the roof met the windshield was modified and the blue dots on the A-pillar were removed and everything was shifted over at that point.
-The front end was elongated and shaped more like a real 328 including the gap at the black line.
-There was a dent in the hood of the original sprite that I smoothed out to flow with the rest of the hood.
-The tires were contoured to be more round.
-The wheels were modified to look more like the stock wheels on a real 328 (including a yellow center cap with a black dot in the middle to represent the horse).
-The exhaust pipe sticking out on the original sprite was removed.
-As the actual game has a black background on the sprite, the front spoiler and lower rear black section aren't defined in the cut out, but they were added.
-I added some red and shading beads to the very upper rear section to accent the spoiler lip on the trunk area that is on a real 328 (this also helped to smooth out the boxy issues on the back of the original sprite--this change was added after the progress photo I posted of the rear section).
-I removed some of the odd dark blue shading on the very rear that is seen on the original sprite.
-I removed the euro style side marker light (that didn't look good anyway) and opted against adding any.
-The rear window louvers were modified to look like the louvers on a 328 GTS (for whatever reason, the original sprite has painted B-pillars [like a GTS] and GTB louvers and roof). You'll see why I did this later without also making the roof black like a GTS.
Here is the finished result with a US quarter at the bottom and another shot of the sprite I worked from (I did not iron this side at all).

Wow those are some sweet cars.
Until you need to haul something big :-\ I've driven the Vette with the hatch fully open multiple times--I may sell it eventually to get something larger, but I'll get next to nothing for a '95 C4 unfortunately.
Yeah I'm a 4x4 guy myself, but I have a soft spot for old muscle cars. I'd love to have a 71 Mustang Mach 1.
I didn't actually intend for the Vette to be in the shot, but it was locked and I didn't bother to get the keys to move it. Though since it has been mentioned now, here are a couple shots I already had in photobucket for those that like these cars (I painted it myself with the Ferrari Boxer paint scheme--I got it as a completely stock car, so any modifications were done by me [including stainless long tube headers and full exhaust with a custom x-pipe--cats and resonator are gone).

-- Now back to the bead sprites -- . I hope some find my next project humorous. I may post a progress shot later if I get another chance to work on it (it is at about the same point from the last shot right now--I don't expect to spend quite as much blocked time as I did on the 328, so this will be a multi day thing, and I may very well run out of beads, so an order may be in between as well.
\/ Yeah, I didn't want to clutter my thread with car shots, but thought the original set would be entertaining to some.
That's sexy. Maybe someone should move these into a post your car thread though.
/\ I've made mention to that in the previous post.
Also, I'd like to know if most people viewing this thread like to see the progress shots (I will take them for myself anyway). Otherwise, I could stop if they just bulk up the thread (I personally like to see how things come together, so they will keep getting posted unless I see that others think they are unnecessary).
Here is the first (unbordered thus far) frame of the Mario/Lolo comic strip (I plan to do them all together before ironing). I think most will be shocked when they see the frame that Lala "kills" Mario in :P (I may be too as I have only seen it in thought).
EDIT:: I added another row to the previous frame and gave it a border...the rest of the new stuff should be obvious :P (you may notice that every frame border will be a different color as I've started the next one in cheddar [that is NOT the same as yellow ;D).
My girlfriend has helped some on filling in what will be quite a large black portion on the second frame (I believe there will be six frames :o --this will be huge). Since the last progress shot posted, I have lowered Lolo in the first frame to cover the first row of the ground as the characters in the game do (this didn't come to my attention until I did Mario in the second frame). As usual, everything I've done thus far is a work in progress, so anything can change. [that is a cartoony bump sticking out of Lolo's head in the second frame as a result of the previous stomping]
EDIT: OMFG (lolz ::)) >:( I just commited what the internet tends to call "EPIC FAIL" -- I finished all the bricks and black in between...then started on a coin to soon realize the scale was off compared to the bricks :-[ :-[ :-[ Now I'm off to go make the bricks 3x7 as opposed to the 2x7 I had been doing (I don't know how I managed to screw that up). This will be redoing a large chunk of the 2nd frame, which I calculated will be 3780 beads alone (counting the shared black border of the first and eventual 3rd frame). This counts the added height over the 1st frame to account for the mistake--the bricks will be lower and higher than they are now).
Thankfully moving beads when they are already on the board is much easier than pulling them out of a bag and fumbling with them. Also, as my father (a.k.a boss) is out of state for a couple weeks on vacation, I'll have the time to fix screw ups like this (still not happy about it :-\)
There are still a couple slight changes that may be made to these frames I'm thinking about, but I've finally gotten frame 1 and 2 to an initial stage of completion. I was afraid I was going to run out of the blue I was using for the bricks, and I am pretty much out. Black and red are almost gone as well. Unfortunately I don't see how I'll be able to finish this until I make another order :-\ I have 4 frames to go... Let me know how you guys think it is coming along (after all, just these two frames alone are quite a large project). [I posted it with the disks again for a size reference] ----- I calculated that it is already up to 5201 beads as pictured below.
It'll probably be the size of a "It's a Boy!" banner when you finish.
I like the idea of a comic strip, it looks pretty cool. :)
Just ironed this one together... Ranay (a.k.a "Ronnie" James Dio ;)) from Holy Diver (945 beads in this one despite how small it looks compared to the car and my current project):
EDIT: When I did this I was going more for the look of shooting from the edge of a roof in the rain at night, but now that I look at it, it also looks like he could be surfing :P
During this lack of bead crisis for my current main project, I may entertain a small NES request (preferably one with an available rom). If it is something that doesn't use any of the colors I am out of, then it would be possible.
I decided to go ahead and iron two frames at a time (and expect that I may be doing 8 frames now...). I figured it would be way too much of a pain to do them all at once and I'd have to get more boards. I made a couple changes since the last posted photo with the fire and sore bump (looked a bit too phallic before--now he reminds me of Bald Bull :P)
Haha, it looks like Mario is a bully. :D
/\ You'll see why come frame 7 or 8 ;) (depending how I do the frames). That will be after Lala kills Mario for beating up Lolo.
Not a game sprite, but I began a bead project of Dave Mustaine. He is my favorite artist, and for those that don't know him, he is the singer, rhythm guitar player, and song writer for the band Megadeth.
This is the photo that it will eventually recreate:
Thus far I only have one board done (I started in the middle so that I could get an idea of how this will look--it looks great from a distance [this shot is taken at an angle on a table, so it may look off from the photo]).
This look great so far!
Thank you Manual. I decided to do one more of the Dave Mustaine boards as there was an adjacent one using colors I still have left. Here is where I'm at:
Face looks good. I wonder how well you'll be doing with all the hair. Must be quite a challenge.
/\ Thankfully I'm not going for a picture perfect look as the Perler beads don't quite have all the colors that would be good for this. Though I found a couple free programs online that help transform the photo into pixels, but the results aren't fantastic. There is a program called photopearls, but you have to buy their brand of beads as well (to match with the program and better skin tones, etc.). I would expect that it is a better program considering you have to pay for it.
The hair may be an issue--some of what I have to work from looks good and some may be difficult to deal with as the colors seem way off, but I'll try to do those areas last and hope they aren't too much of a problem for me to match.
The final result will be over 20000 beads, so it is quite a project.
Wow, 20000 beads. :o
Have fun!
Thanks for the support ;)
The Dave Mustaine one will probably get framed in some fashion.
On a side note, I notice from Satoshi's thread that "Uninvited Gremlin" wanted to have the Univited gremlin guy done in beads. So if he didn't care about saving that project for himself, then I have a cool idea for a 3D Uninvited Gremlin using the back and front from his Av. and adding sides (it would be quite a few beads as well). If he still wants to see that, then I would consider tackling it after all these things I've got going on. It may be a while before I could get to it though. Yet I could still do minor requests in between if anyone has them.
Oh boy, looks like I've unleashed a monster :D Your stuff looks great. The situation here couldn't be better, as you and I seem to have totally different styles and tastes. I hope rather than compete, we can compliment and work off each other's styles and tastes. I stick to 8-bit mostly and can commend you on your projects. Congratulations on finishing the Rad Racer car! It turned out sweet. The others are nice too. I've thought of doing scenes before, but a short attention span allows me to make isolated sprites and then move on. I like the crossovers. They're crazy and awesome! Congrats to you! Hmm...maybe I should try something like that myself. The transition of photo to beads is something I wouldn't even attempt. The cost in beads and time is simply enormous. You are rather bold to do that! I commend you. I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. That being said.....its time to update my own stuff!
/\ Thanks a ton for your compliments. As stated, your Super Pig is too cool to compete against anyway ;)
I'm in the middle of the 3rd frame of the comic strip, and while the first sprite was 100% from the game and the second was strongly based on the actual sprite (aside from the bump), the 3rd one is pretty much a complete custom Lolo sprite for the situation, and I use a SMB3 sprite for the first time in the strip, but in a different SMB1 stage. Lala will make her first appearance in the 4th frame, and will kill Mario in the 5th (and while I'll be slightly altering his SMB3 sprite [one of his suited characters] his death will be the original SMB1 death sprite)
Unfortunately, I'll have to wait for the order I placed yesterday to come in to do much else (I'm completely out of black).
As for the cost on the photo recreation, I can agree it is costly in the scope of bead art, but when it is done it will be about $26 worth of beads (considering the shipped cost of a 55k order), and if the Dave Mustaine turns out as cool as I hope, then it will be well worth it to frame and hang on the wall.
My bead order came in. Here is the un-ironed, backwards 3rd frame... I may wait until frame 4 is done before ironing to the rest of the comic strip.
How's your Mustaine going?
/\ That was on hold until I got my bead order as well. I just got home a few hours ago from a short trip and the beads got here earlier today. I had done the 3rd frame almost completely, but needed to fill in the last blue and black beads to finish it, so that was easy. I expect I'll be working on both off and on. However, I found a program that I can program a color palette into that transforms photos into squares for cross stitching... so I was going to color match all my beads and put that into available colors and see what it comes up with--if I like the result, I may start over before getting too far into it.
Awesome! Good luck on Mustaine, I cant wait to see it. Megadeth is awesome! I can't wait to see your comic strip either, it looks pretty unique to say the least! :D
Lala makes her first appearance, and is taking out some of her frustration on Goombas. The first two Lala sprites are ghost images to show where she had already been (they glow in the dark too :P). Technically I've made Lala based on Lolo's "Lolo 2" sprite, but added the tip of the bow and swapped colors, as well as changed the shape slightly and altered the eyes to look angry (Lala's [and Lolo's] playable sprite in Lolo 3 looks a little different [the bow is more visible when she is walking the other direction, so there may be more of it in the next frame]). Oh, and the Goomba's eyes have been altered as I didn't think the typical angry look was very suiting for a Goomba that has been knocked into the air.
And a larger version of the two newest ones:
The look on the Goomba's face is priceless!
/\ Thanks for the comments (to everyone that has commented)--they're what boost my motivation. Though I expect only Satoshi from this board can truly appreciate the time I spend on these.
A great deal of thought has gone into each frame of the comic strip, so I hope I am providing entertainment with these (to those merely lurking as well). Some of my fondest childhood memories of the NES go to the SMB and Lolo series, so I'm certainly enjoying doing these, and I hope I'm being creative enough that what I'm going to do next isn't obvious. Other favorites from childhood are Zelda and Mega Man of course, though Satoshi has more than covered Mega Man (I'll have to do something eventually though :P).
I think it would be cool if you started making Famicom game labels into a NES-like style. I.e, since Satoshi did all the Megaman sprites, you could do a few labels. Like the Rockman 2 label. I don't know. It's just an idea :P
/\ If you mean to transition the actual cartridge label art...hmm. I wonder how I'd go about doing that. Now that you've produced the idea, I expect I'll look into the possibilty of doing a label in beads, but I expect it may be quite a challenge. We'll see. Good idea though.
I also love that Goomba in the air. The face reminds me a bit of those from the Kunio games. :D
Another 2 boards of Dave (3364 beads thus far):
I added some more to the bottom portion of the face. I think that is the lowest I will be going on this now. I may add some to the top, but I'm not certain. Though I will be adding enough to the sides to make it at least square in the end. I'm thinking I may have issues with some of the hair due to my available colors, but I'll see what I can do (this is why I may make it smaller than initially intended). Either way, it isn't done yet.
Couple small updates... I may have a chance to do some more later tonight.
4 more rows were added to the top of the Mustaine (I may go longer than a square for the horizontal before I call it done [a square would be 16 more lines wider than it is now]).
And this is all I've done thus far for the next Mario/Lolo frame...I've decided Bowser will make an appearance in this frame as a team with Lala.
EDIT: I started working on frame 5 again and I'm liking how the Lala has turned out thus far (I had originally planned something different, but I think I'll be happier with this route). Also, I'm realizing this frame is going to be monstrous... good thing I'll have a lot of black to work with since it seems I've decided to cut the Mustaine project shorter than the original plan (this one is set in a SMB1 castle theme, so black will be the main background).
This frame is certainly going to be the most epic of the strip...the most comedic frame will be last ;)
I've flipped this in Paint so you can get a better idea of what it will look like finished. There will be at least 2 more shooting characters to add including Bowser (and perhaps one of the enemies from Lolo). For those that don't know, Lala is shooting what Lolo/Lala gets as a weapon of sorts in the Lolo series to turn enemies into eggs for puzzles or kill them (generally temporarily as they respawn)--it is also used in boss battles.
EDIT: The rest of the frames will be going below the previous frames as that would be the most possible to frame afterwards if I should choose to do so, and also this would be very difficult to transport if it were all one length :P.
Another flipped progress shot... I'm going to see what I can do about adding throwing hammers from Bowser, but there isn't much room to work with, and I'm not making it any taller than the one line above Marios head...it is definitely going to be the largest frame by far as is (could have fit in 10, but I've got 12 29x29 boards out).

Yep, Mario is pretty much f*&^ed here... and Lolo is dead, but you can see help has arrived. Let me know what you think. A couple other different game cameos may appear in the final frame as well (2 more frames to go I think).

Haha, that's one frame full of action. I'm curious for the next frames.
haha cleaver. I really ought to try my hand at these sort of scenes.

Yes you should--I'd like to see what you'd come up with ;)
And thanks for everyones' comments thus far. That last frame was a big one. 6 will be smaller again and I'm not certain how large 7 will be yet, but it will be the most customized frame and Rock and Link may make cameos along with introduction of another Mario character.
Here is frame 6--it is mostly meant as a link between 7 and the rest of the comic, so it isn't much, and it has some unnecessary violence towards Mario, but I guess that is what I get for listening to Bonded By Blood while doing the last frame (Mario wasn't even planned to be in frame 6 :P). But Lala conquers Mario, the white mage revives Lolo, and the text sets up frame 7... Toad may seem concerned, but he really only wanted to inform Mario that the princess was in another castle...
[it was quite frustrating trying to figure out how to do a lower case "e" at the size I wanted]

Wow, in the last frame of page 4 of this thread, Mario was killed by a fire stick, hammers, AND a bomb! And Lala was safe from all of them! That last one of Mario's separate head is funny. It reminds me of the face that the toad makes in Battletoads when he sees the first boss. :D

The "bomb" was intended to be the combined explosion of Bowser's flames and Lala's "Lolo" shots. But ultimately Mario was facing death by the fire stick, hammers, Lala's shots, and Bowser's flames. I've tried to include as many level staples as possible when doing the actual stages (the last frame was not done as a stage, so there was no background). There is the fish, both the bush and hill thing from the first level, coral, bubbles "100" score, sewer pipe, Goomba, underground bricks, a coin, fire stick, 2 layers of each levels floor, Bowser, Bowser's flame, the floating platform, several forms of Mario (including the fireball), hammers, etc. (considering just the SMB1 stuff...the DDP/SMB2 "Bom(b)" is somewhat unrelated to Mario as far as this forum is concerned).
I'm not sure how the final frame will end up--nor have I been sure about any of the frames. You can probably even go through the thread and see inconsistencies with plans I even posted (even some of the progress shots changed from the final versions).
I may go back to the Mustaine for the next beading session however.
Oh, and now that you mention it, I do see the resemblance to the Battletoads face :P
Added another piece to the Mustaine... It has become quite difficult to attach these pieces at these lengths.

And a shot standing up on a stool so I could take a less distorted (more straight on) shot of it:

It's coming along great! I can tell you've put in a lot of time and effort just to get that far! :o
/\ Thanks--there has been a lot of language to get this far (particularly during the ironing). I believe this may be as far as I will be going with this. I may frame it with a signed Dave photo I got with the fan club. Or I could be really ridiculous and dress the head in a shirt and jeans Dave actually wore and signed :P (I won't).
I'd go with the first one, if I were you :P
I think it would look pretty artsy and cool if it were framed with a signed photo of him.
The comic is done ;D . I don't think I have to explain what is going on, and please refrain from any blue ball comments, or anything about Link being in the closet with an exposed weapon. Some may recognize what is hidden near Rock (a.k.a Mega Man). Some Mega Man fans may be upset that I depicted Rock in all this debauchery, but if it is any condolence, he was first ;) I think everyone already knows that Link is adventurous :P If it were me, I'd probably flip the Goomba painting :-\
EDIT: The bed is a taller, longer, and color swapped version of a bed in another NES game (anyone know which one?)

And to give some idea of how big this has become (pictured with the very first NES game I ever owned since it was brand new back when I was about 5).

Were you born in 1980?
/\ No, Jan '85, but that was still the main system being sold when I was 5 ;) Didn't mean to suggest brand new as in the newly released system--just brand new off the shelf (as opposed to getting into the NES a few days ago and having bought that game first :P)
I just looked up when that SMB/DH multicart came out, and it was in Nov. '88, so I would have been off anyways. :P
Well, I was figuring the layout may be obvious anyway, but since I don't think it's always the same...
Near Rock (either side) is the first code I ever got in Mega Man 2 that's for the Wily stages (For me it's up there with the Konami code, Justin Bailey, and IDDQD).
The bed is based off of Little Nemo (if you've never played the game, you may have seen the movie - "Pajamas, pajamas, pajamas!" :O)

EDIT: For those interested, I just counted the total number of beads used on the comic to be 25,979.
Hadn't done anything with beads in ages, but my current girlfriend has some obsession with Mudkip, so I made this for her (1935 beads total):

I still want to see the gremlin from Uninvited turned into a bead sprite.

I actually had that planned out as a 3D box, using the front and back image... Still have yet to do it, but now that I know someone else would be interested in seeing it, it may happen ;)
ah so its true. I heard all girls likes Mudkipz.
That looks really great! The background shading is an awesome touch.
It's been ages since I made anything either.
I've been working on a grand project that will take quitttttte a bit of time.
