Just won something that I think is pretty awesome.... a STRIDER famicom cart complete with custom box and instructions!

Oh, cool.  When did the FC version of Strider get found/dumped?

crade

that is cool.  You mean won as in contest or as in ebay auction? :)
GRRR!

stealthlurker

won it on yahoo japan.

as far as I know there are 2 other confirmed Strider famicom protos that have been sold on yahoo japan. I archived one of the latter auctions. The previous one is archived on clovel's website. However both only came in a plain white cart with what looks like a hand drawn label.

if you dont mind me asking, did this cost over $1,000?

are you going to dump it? Id be sure to check and make sure its not a repro, somone who owned the proto at one time could have dumped it and made a few custom carts. This looks like a legit release and I dont think it ever got that far along, not even label art....regardless, Im stunned, thats a beautiful cart right there, congratulations!!! and if you ever decide to sell or fall into a bad place and need a kidney...... Im your man!  ......Yes, I would trade an organ I have 2 of for a rare videogame cartridge.   ;)

Yeah I know it was never officially released in Japan, that's why I'm stoked about this pick-up. They had ads and a commercial but it got cut. I also saw another amazing piece with quality like this job... so the hunt continues, haha.

Is it legit or a repro?  I thought it was a repro.

Ok I'll rephrase that so as to not downplay your find.  It is a repro in terms of art etc.  I recognised Genzoman's style.  Certain other stylistic nods also suggested that.  Its inline with the early releases.
Having said that, it looks polished and exciting!

There's another piece of art Genzoman made, I like that too;

So, the big question is - do you think the code is authentic or is it a translation hack?
The board will prove that - but I'd be surprised if someone recased a legit proto in that sense so I'd expect it to be a dumped cart repro, or a translation hack.

Again, not downplaying an amazing find!  If I had that I'd be thrilled regardless!
I've said before I don't see inane value in protos but I do see value in creativity like this.

Oh I totally hear you about the possibilities and risk in this item.

It's "obviously" a repro (or at least a very, very high probability) in at least the box/label/art department. Yeah I won't know for sure about the actual ROM image used until I get in my hands.

Regardless, it's an interesting piece. Anyways... in addition to legit CIB carts, I do pick up famicom pirate carts of FDS only, US only and some hacks.

Yes me too - I love to get those. One thing I'm working on is polished box art, label and manual for all of those - so I really like to see things like this.  I'm actually pleasantly surprised that a Japanese fellow has used Genzoman's art though, I always thought it was quite Western compared to the flagship Capcom artists.

Keep us posted!  This is an amazing find in my eyes.

Every time I open this thread and see that title screen music starts playing in my head.

Wow this is awesome, but the art used in the box looks like modern design...not a 80`s type

Wow, you gotta dump that thing.

... and then give us a hint as to where we can find its rom.   ;D

Its probably not an actual prortotype, prob just the american rom. Those Japanese rom screenshots are from a different auction I think.

That picture of the screenshots I took from the actual auction. The description of the auction states that those are the actual screenshots from the cart for sale.
