You can definitely get loose Contra for less than that!

Spoiler
famicom Contra loose in ok condition = $25

famicom Super Contra loose in ok condition  = $20

Of course both sell in instances for more and less than this, but this is my benchmark based on a lot of completed listings on eBay.
You could also likely snag them for less on forums like here, if you ask the right seller in the right way.

Do official contra carts sometimes come with glob top chips?  I didn't realise that.  So I guess you'd have to just buy a bunch of loose carts, open them up until you find your DIP chip cart and sell the rest?  You could do that with $100, surely if you bought 5 carts one might have a DIP chip in at least.

it's always a lottery. Even if you buy 10 carts or more.

Can you really feel the difference when playing?

I wouldn't rely much on opinion of someone, who is more after cardboard than real IC  ::) IMO not sure about $100, but 25-30% above average market value.
I don't buy, sell or trade at moment.
But my question is how hackers at that time were able to hack those games?(c)krzy

Depends on condition. IMO for $25 it should be very good condition.
