Hey everyone, been a lurker and fan of this site for years.  I thought I'd give a heads up on a little guide I made.  It's still being worked on as far as visuals/functionality is concerned, but all the essential content is there.  I wanted to try and make a thorough guide that covered the whole spectrum of NES, Famicom, and Famicom Disk System shoot 'em ups.  It includes licensed and unlicensed stuff, even some unreleased and homebrews.

Anyway, feel free to check it out, and most importantly hope you enjoy/find something new!   :)

Here's the link to my blog with the guide -

Cheers! (or should I say Kampai!) :-[

thanks a lot for this! it looks pretty useful!

I like how Donkey Kong 3's on there. ;D Kinda weird seeing as the first two games are platformers.

And a reminder that I need to dig out that S.C.A.T. cart (that's been buried under a pile of other neglected games, dust, and possibly dead insect carcasses) and actually play the damn thing. My backlog has a backlog. :(

Are you considering multi-genre games that include shmups in them? (à la Golgo 13)

It makes sense, though.  I was watching a video on Youtube where Howard Phillips mentioned that Nintendo mixed both platforming and shooter elements for DK3.  I hadn't thought about it that way before, but when you get into the game (like 7 or 8 levels in), it really starts to make sense as it becomes much more about dodging enemies rather than simply jamming the "spray" button and occasionally dodging a bug.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Jed QuestMaster - yeah I was going to add Golgo 13 to the "Shmup Elements" section but I recalled the shmup part was pretty negligable.  Looking at it again though, it seems there's more shmup action than I thought, so I'll probably add it back into the list.

S.C.A.T is great fun. "You must destroy them, the earth is counting on you, Good Luck!"  ;D

What about Destination Earthstar for NES?  It's a mix of space-sim and horizontal shooter.

Wow, and I thought I've seen all there is to see in this genre. Only further proof of how gigantic the NES's library is.

Pretty cool list, but I've got a couple of corrections for you:

1) It's "The Adventures of Dino-Riki"
2) Magic Carpet 1001 is a horizontal shooter.

Thanks for that!
I had gathered a smaller list for FC shooters reading from several threads on the shmup forum, but it seems I missed quite a few.
