Gaming pet-peeves

I guess another pet peeve are the weird girls who work at Gamestop and sometimes the really loser-y guys who talk about how they hate their lives. They make it awkward as frig to buy stuff there. I would never want to work at a brick-and-mortar game shop. :P

One time I asked for a copy of Zelda on 3DS, and they kept saying "Which system?" I say 3DS, and they say "PS3 or PS4?". I hate how ignorant the employees are about Nintendo products!

There were also a bunch of weirdos when I went to Video Games Live concert a few years ago. It's something you kinda have to expect lol.

Sadly, appropriate social skills is not a prerequisite for being either an employee or a customer at one. Luckily, I was in charge of hiring at my location the last few years I worked there, so at least I didn't have any complaints. haha

That was many years ago though. Luckily, there's not even an equivalent market for that type of store where I live now.  ;D

Some may disagree, but I can't stand pirate carts.

Obviously there are cool original games like Pokemon, Samurai Shodown etc. that weren't originally released, but I'm talking about standard bootleg games. The cheap plastic, the shitty labels. Ugh, I can't stands them!

The cheap plastic shit is one of the main reasons why I can't sell any Famicom cartridges. In Estonia everyone thinks that they are the same Russian/Taiwan/Chinese bullshit that flooded flea markets some 20-25 years ago so nobody wants to pay more than 2€ for a cartridge (not even for mint condition). The 90's pirate business has spoiled the whole population - I have been laughed at when I offered Goonies CIB for sale for the following reasons:

  • yeah right it's made in Japan

  • that's some pirated hack, the "original" title screen was blank (without any text)

  • of course it's in "original" box - so was Steepler (thank's a lot)

I don't like when people refer to Zelda Ocarina of Time as 'Zelda 1' or 'the first Zelda'. It's actually the 5th in the series...

Another thing that bothers me is when people call the Wii Balance Board 'the Wii Fit'. Wii Fit is software, not hardware. It's like if I called the Balance Board 'the Punch Out Wii'. That makes me mad

Yeah poorly made in-game tutorials are no fun. Some games have incredibly boring "training levels" that you are forced to do, are really basic, way to long and completely free of challenges or fun. Plus you probably don't need it to figure out how to play anyway.  But sometimes they do it right and manages to make a fun training mode that feels part of the game.

True, and I'm thinking of Star Fox 64, where the other pilots are giving you tips as you fly, but you don't feel like you have to obey each one of them before the game lets you proceed, and the first level is quite exciting. You're not forced to do a barrel roll, after all (but you should).

Or Dark Souls, where you can run right past the tutorial stuff, and the game doesn't even tell you that you're supposed to run away from the first boss initially. And it even gives you the option of beating the boss at the beginning, if you're good enough at the gameplay.

It's just too bad that the current trend in game design is to treat the player like a moron.

But I try not to be too belligerent about this type of design when playing with my friends' newer games and such. Although I do sometimes throw in the occasional reference to Egoraptor's Sequelitis which deals with this subject ("Mega Man! Mega Man! There's a hole ahead!" "SHUT UP, I don't need you!")
Favorites: Castlevania, Metroid, Namco 18

P

Star Fox and Star Fox 64 also both has a training mode that is both fun and useful for warming up before starting the game.

There are sometimes tutorials that isn't very fun but still necessary to play, like the Junction explanation tutorial in FFVIII for instance. The Junction system isn't very logical (for those who haven't played FFVIII, it's a system where you "equip" "spells" to your parameters like Strength, Vitality, Intelligence etc.) and it's necessary to know how it works to play the game.

I heard people complain about the game that you need to use your Guardian Forces (summoned monsters with very long summon scenes) all the time because the characters are too weak to fight on their own. Those people probably never understood how to use the junction system properly.

Like there ever was a Zelda game for a Sony system. Sellers who are clueless about the industry of the products they are selling sure are annoying. I usually play stupid when I enter a store in order to make them put off their guard, then you figure out soon that they are trying to sound like they know allot about the thing they are selling although they know much less then you do.

Haha that's so stupid. I never heard anyone calling it that though.

A pet peeve of mine is when people believe that all pirates are of low quality, when I am sitting on a box of maybe 300+ carts, 90% of which are of the same quality as the originals.

Early 90s Taiwanese pirates are awesome, almost the same quality as the real deal, and some were probably even made by the same molds the originals were.

Later crap in Eastern Europe and the modern Chinese crap though, that is junk quality, though some games were only available that way.

number47, if you have some games you can't get rid of for, trade, maybe I am interested.

Fcgamer, trading is my only hope, but so far I have only managed to trade with collectors out of my country and I guess you as a serious collector already have the titles that I have to offer. Do you have some sort of "wanted list" somewhere?

fcgamer

PM sent my friend.  I can't wait to see what goodies you may have.  Pics are also very good, since sometimes I like to purchase the pirates just for the artwork.

Actually, I started tiling the wall in my game room in Famicom carts...and then my gf wonders why I hate to move out of this apartment ;)   ;D

I agree on the quality complaint. Some of my bootlegs (like my whirlwind Manu carts actually seem to be of slightly higher quality if that makes sense. They are just so solid with high quality cases and zero rattle.

Yes!  The Whirlwind Manu carts are generally of excellent quality!  And to think this stuff was distributed all around Asia and South America (and maybe Africa too) during the early 1990s.

People who write off retro gaming just because "it's old" without even trying it.  Then they go back to the boring cookie cutter FPS of the week on a "next-gen" console, which nowadays are just PCs in a pretty box.  Different strokes for different folks :)

Ok, one more - I get real fustrated when I have to beat 3-4 different bosses in a row with no powerups. Kid dracula, Streetfighter 2010 and Akumajou Densetsu are hard as hell without the final misery. After a week of practice I finally managed to nail Hoshi no Kirby thou  ;D

Somethings that I hate that aren't just minor pet-peeves are in Metroid and Zelda 1. In Metroid, you start off with just 30 energy after you die. Thats enough to kill you in 2 hits. Especially when you're in Kraid's Hideout and have no chance in getting anywhere. Same thing with Zelda. You die, and you only start off with 3 hearts. Imagine how hard it is to restart in a dungeon that's full of Darknuts. Those things are strong, have armor, and there's like 8 in a room... You have no chance, unless you go outside and find hearts or fairies.

These games should have started you off with full life when you continue after dying. Zelda is still a very good game to this day, but I think Metroid is a flawed game. Even though Metroid is fun, I feel as if development was rushed and the game wasn't as polished as other Nintendo games in the NES era. There were also many glitches in Metroid, so you know they didn't have time to fix everything. Miyamoto himself said that Zelda 1 was a little rushed in its development. That's actually the reason why the dungeons were very simple and why the 2nd quest was created, they ran out of time to go over the game and redesign certain parts.

I guess it's a common thing for japanese games that you respawn as somewhat disabled - Bellmonts have short whip, Ricky in moon crystal has fewer lives and no jumpboots etc...
