Why was he named Rockman? Does anyone know?

I had heard once that the Japanese couldn't pronounce Megaman, but I think that's a myth. And I picked the classic Megaman -- the results will likely be skewed because this is an 8-bit site.

That's just a myth. Megaman is easy to pronounce even for Japanese people.
As far as I remember from the games it is that Dr. Light had an assistant robot called "Rock". He modified it to be a combat robot to fight Dr Wily and renamed it Rockman. Or so the story goes.
