It's an ohmmeter, it measures the electrical resistance of your body by means of an electric current circulating through your skin.
The meter's needle is probably wired in reverse (lower resistance makes the needle go right). You're supposed to hold one test probe, your SO holds the other one, and then you hold hands together. Sweaty palms will lower the skin resistance and provide a higher reading.

Ok, and manuel....do you know how that one without the box works exactly...?  It seems they've replaced the balls with some kind of new connector...and Babelfish isn't exactly shedding light on it...
