Collecting all the games

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before but I thought it might make an interesting topic for discussion....

Has anyone ever attempted to collect all the officially released Famicom games?  Or is anyone trying to do so now?

I was considering giving that a go but now have basically dropped the idea.  It sounds like a cool idea but then I thought....do I really need 50 or so different baseball games, Mahjong games, horse racing games etc etc.

Seems like it would be a massive undertaking, anybody giving it a go?

There was a guy featured on GameCenter CX who had all Famicom games.

Some guy almost did...then he backed out of it :P
I like to glitch old VHS tapes and turn them into visuals for live music events. Check out what I'm working on - www.instagram.com/tylerisneat

Because it costs a whole lot of money.

I'm sure there are some people who have a complete Famicom collection, but I don't see the point... I'd collect only the games I like to play.

I plan to have every game, but I do that because I don't emulate and my obsession means I want to be able to try every game. I'm kinda like manuel, tho. I buy to play -- that's why I don't buy CIB.

Also, there is a thread on here with a link to a CIB collection or something, but I can't seem to find it.

I'd imagine it's easier to actually accomplish something like that in Japan. But living elsewhere it would be really expensive to do.

I'm in Japan and I've put together a decent sized collection (about 80 games) without spending too much, if you keep your eyes open the big stores sometimes unload excess stock of old games real cheap.  One of the shops near my place put bundles of 5 cartridges on sale for 200 yen each (about 2$ US).  Problem is that you won't get any of  the expensive games that way.....

I think I'm with Manuel though, it makes more sense to buy the games you want to play.  I've gotten a few games in these bundles that are completely useless (particularly the "keiba" horse racing games which there are a lot of) and just wastes of space.

Mind you, it would be a cool thing to brag about if you got them all.

Google turned up this story about Mandarake selling all the cart games for 650,000 yen:

I don't think I would want to get them that way though, seems like most of the fun would be had in the hunt for the games you need!

Actually, I don't think it's all that expensive, even if overseas. One of the main reasons is that there aren't but a couple exceedingly rare games, like Recca and maybe Tailor-Made. The rest of the rare games are "special" editions that typically have no significant change to the retail release -- they just added a word to the title screen, a new color to the main character, painted the cart gold or put a new label on it. Those types of rares aren't necessary for a full collection, imo.

If you buy games in lots it's the easiest way to get the games you need and make someone money back to help you buy more games.

I also buy to play and don't buy CIB unless I can find them for the same price as a loose cart.  I don't much understand the point of paying a lot of money for something you'll never use just because its in mint condition....

How far along are you with your collection?  Getting close?

I prefer to buy CIB Famicom items as I don't plan to collect Famicom games for the sake of collecting, and for whatever reason decided I like keeping Famicom games complete, though with my NES game collecting I sell every box I get (save for complete RPGs such as Dragon Warrior with maps, etc.).

I suppose for some people mere carts aren't enough of a challenge or cost for their collecting desire and/or financial status.  I could never imagine collecting CIB, and I believe I read about someone on NA that had most  of the NES library sealed.

\/  EDIT:  I've recently sold off a little over 100 of my NES games as I've stopped collecting for the sake of collecting (and seem to be more interested in Famicom stuff nowadays as well).

I'm with Manuel. I only collect games that I would actually play
Now you're playing with Power

I only buy the games I want to play, but I get those ones CIB. The box and manual art can be pretty damn nice. And sometimes there are little surprises in there, like RAF World having notes of the music in the manual.
