Problems with spammers, haters, etc.

This isn't related to this forum at all, but I'm looking for some advice from the staff of FW.  How would you deal with someone who's bashing another member on a forum for stupid reasons, and is using a proxy for registering accounts?

I would disable automatic user registration -- meaning that all new members must be approved by an admin or moderator.  Before approving a new user, check if the IP they registered with is a proxy.  If so, deny the account (or just let it sit in limbo indefinitely).

It's more work for you and the mods, but eventually the troll will get bored and leave.  Then you can turn the automatic registration (the email validation kind) back on.

We did that at one time, because we got one like this before, but we shortly stopped, because we hadn't really agreed upon it as a staff.  We'll probably just start doing it again for at least a month or so.  Thanks for the advice.

Do you have any method of banning MAC addresses? That usually silences all but the most determined trolls.

Looking at the CP, I don't believe so.   We banned his first account, so I guess we'll see what happens.

But yeah, I know this troll from yet another forum, and he isn't very persistant, he'll join, get banned, wait a week or so and join again, it isn't a constant banishment war.
