Having recently gotten a pirated copy of ANN, I was surprised to find many differences that I had no idea about beforehand.  From the Holy Grail section of Famicom World, it mentions it being a "basic hack" and having not researched it much, I only expected the different castle characters, night swap on 1-1, Goomba and Piranha Plant swaps, etc.

However, for those that don't already know, and I'm sure many here do (it's just new to me and I couldn't find a similar thread in a search), here are some differences:

-The game offers the same choice of Mario or Luigi from SMB2j, so Luigi jumps much higher and slides a bit (can jump over several flags).  Choosing Luigi alone makes it a rather new experience.

-The levels 5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 7-2, 7-3, and 8-4 are swapped with the mostly more difficult SMB2j levels.

-Items are swapped all over the game from their typical locations, sometimes there are new hidden bricks, some bricks have been added, and some have been removed (most items are relocated relatively close to where they are missing, some are swapped for other items [growth mushroom/flower where a 1up would be, etc..],  some I couldn't find).

-some of the hammer bros. chase you quickly, and I don't think this happens in the original.

Otherwise, some of the ones that are more obvious up front:

SMB2j graphics swapped out for much of the game, some microphones in the scenery, a different Japanese celebrity or ANN jockey or something at the end of every world (they all come back for a special game ending on 8-4 as well).

Feel free to post other differences I may have forgotten (probably not a big deal to point out small differences like the Jewish stars and eye symbol thing on the flag and in place of the axe, etc.)...I plan to try out the minus level at some point, unless someone already knows what happens (I wondered if it sends you to the cart version, the FDS version, or something different from both).

At any rate, I figured some people that thought this game only swapped a couple sprites and changed day to night on the first level (as I did when I first heard about it) might like to know it's much much more than that.

I tried the minus world. It doesn't exist. You're taken to a pipe that leads to the flag in 1-2.

/\  Thanks  ;)   And interesting nonetheless

Yes, it was removed in SMB2j.
The last "released" SMB game to have it is VS. SMB

@Medisinyl: stages are from: SMB, SMB2j and VS. SMB (arcade)

I've never played Vs. SMB--do you know which levels from that are in ANN?
