Yesterday, my Sister comes over to ask to use the computer. I say yes, so she does. All fine and dandy? No...She fucking spilled GRAPE JUICE all over my fucking SIXTY DOLLAR wireless keyboard...leaves, DOESN'T tell me, and doesn't apologize. I had to spend ALL NIGHT cleaning and drying EACH key and putting them back in...making me a fucking tired mess for work today...

In conclusion, never let anyone touch your computer.

For me, it's now the opposite. As you may know, my computer crashed. So, I've been using my brother's computer. Eating around it, downloading stuff onto it, and even changing the desktop background. Yes, I'm taking over. But I'm always very careful. It was my brother who dropped my laptop, busting my CD ROM drive, just a few months before my computer died.

So yesterday me and my better half were enjoying "The Illusionist" on DVD when I smelled something burning, like an electric burning smell. I couldn't find where it was coming from so I came into the office and checked my computer. Sure enough it was coming from the back of the CPU. Fuck. I quickly backed up whatever wasn't already on to my 250G external and did some research before the machine caught fire. I found that it was probably a faulty PSU (power supply unit).

Now I'm in the car on my way to microcenter with the computer in the back seat getting ready to pay $100+ to fix/replace the thing. I found a PSU for $30, and I took a look around at the people there and thought, I'm smarter than these jokers, why am I gonna pay them $50 to do this. So I paid for the PSU and left. Now mind you, I've never even opened a PC and messed around with the insides before. I came home and told my fiancee I was going to fix it myself and she gave me one of those "you're a total idiot" looks. She took a nap, and after a little wire juggling, cursing, and dusting, it looked like I had the new PSU set up just like the old one was. Moment of truth, "click", it powered on, no burning smell, and everything works fine.

I did it!  ;D

I'm going to celebrate with a nice full slab of ribs!

You've never opened a PC before? :o Did you do any cleaning while you were in there? :P

ya and it was a dust factory in there! I picked up a can of air and sprayed the shit out of it. we had to sweep up all the dust that came out of the machine.

Congrats on the fix. Dont you love when your other half gives you those looks lol! :D

manuel

That was like the first time I opened a PC. Dust all over!

My wife never gives me such looks. I don't know why, but somehow she has the stupid idea that I actually *can* repair stuff. ;D Well, until now I didn't destroy anything and all I fixed or built in worked afterwards, so I guess I have a good record. ;)

Hehe, one of my brothers learned the lesson the hard way.  A friend went on his comp, and the next day it had viruses and spyware.

Switchstance

None touch my computer, that's like the main law here at my house, my brother (who is 22) had his own computer, like my mom. So none is messing around, but besides my computer I really hate when my brother take out my consoles out of the boxes, play a while and leave everything there, he don't unplug the pads or disconnect the adaptor, nothing, that really make me angry. The other day my sms pad had something on it, like grease or something, that's why now he must ask my permission to use my consoles. I gift him a PS2 thinking "now he isn't going to touch my stuff again", but nope, he's still playing old games on my old and classic consoles.

Sucks, man. :( Same thing happened to me a while back. I was eventually able to recover the files. I hope it's a momentary glitch and/or recoverable.
