Hi all, I am looking for people with expertise in potential differences beteween Famicom and NES versions of the same game.

The game in question is Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Let me clarify that I am NOT talking about the Gold Version of Punch-Out!! but the one with Mike Tyson in it. I am wondering if anyone here has knowledge of in-game differences between the Famicom and NES versions. I am talking technically not with regards to graphics, text, endings etc. There are well documented differences in the NTSC and PAL versions of this game but no one has documented the differences between Famicom and NES (yes I know they are both NTSC).

Furthermore does anyone know if an emulator rom for the Famicom MTPO was ever made??

Any information on this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There are no differences between the Famicom and NES versions of MTPO.  The gold version is a different story.

Are there differences in the hardware? e.g. how Famicom handles mtpo and how NES does?

nintendodork

Nope.  The ROM used in MTPO on the NES and the Famicom is exactly the same.  The Famicom and NES handle it exactly the same.

Unless you have PAL hardware.  The PAL hardware gives you an easier version - it's a tad slower being 50hz ;)

So is there a way to use an NTSC version of mtpo on a PAL Famicom??

Also is there an easy way to tell if someone is using a PAL version (like if you could see gameplay?)

There is no PAL Famicom (Unless we're talking about the Hong-Kong Famicom, which I'm not sure of).  A regular Japanese Famicom (with the proper 72-to-60 pin connector) will run any NES game.  If you play a PAL game on a Famicom on an NTSC TV, I'm pretty sure the game will run at full speed.

AFAIK, the HK Fami is PAL.

In the strictest sense, the HK Famicom is a kludged together PAL Famicom. It runs Japanese software perfectly, unlike the European NES which is a proper PAL system and (mostly) runs on different software than its American/Japanese counterpart.

I was actually talking about the UK NES when I said PAL hardware.  Obviously if you played any NTSC games on it you'd need a lockout chip job - but for my PAL NES with powerpak and a couple of famiclones every game runs slower.  It's gotten to the point where I can't play PAL any more now.  It quite noticeable on Rockman 2 and especially Megadrive games like Sonic, Streets of Rage 2 and Burning Force.

So forgive my technological ineptitude, but, would it be possible to get an NTSC game to run on a PAL system? and if so would it run at 50hz?

nintendodork

If you have an official PAL NES, then you have to disable the lockout chip in order to play NTSC games on it.  But yes, the NTSC game would still run at 50Hz.

So would your TV need to be PAL in order to use this configuration?

I guess I am wondering if you had the Hong Kong PAL Famicom that was mentioned above could you run the NTSC famicom version of mtpo at 50hz (as opposed to the usual 60hz) on it with a PAL or NTSC television?

Exactly. But why would you want to slow down the game escapes me. Pretty much any TV in Europe made in the last century supports 60 Hz.

Extra note - even my 60HZ TV plays the NES and some famiclones in 50HZ...  If you connect a PAL NES to a 60HZ TV, it won't automatically play in 60HZ or anything.  But you obviously need a TV that will play a PAL signal.
