Famicom without an RF cable

Today i baught a Famicom without any chords.
a Sega Mark 1 power chord works fine for it. however when i use a NES PAL RF chord on it the audio sounds of static and the actual music/sfx dont come through.
is this because im using the NES RF BOX cable or could there be a problem with my newly baught famicom?
should i buy a regular RF chord without any box or seek out a famicom box RF cable? i think i also heared there was a volume switch on the famicom RF box tell me if this has something to do with it.

Are you trying to use it on a PAL TV?

The Famicom is NTSC-J, so an RF hook-up likely won't work on a PAL TV, unless newer PAL TVs support doing so. Additionally, I think there was something weird about the PAL NES switchbox (they actually had a PAL part number for it), but I'm not positive (and can't remember) if it is in any way different to the NTSC boxes. It may not work with a Famicom either though.

If you're stuck in PAL-Land, you can do an A/V or PAL mod to the unit, or locate a 'Hong Kong Edition' (Nintendo-brand) PAL Famicom.
