This is a hard one to answer - as this may surprise you but I think the MegaDrive is THE best retro gaming hardware, with many great titles to choose from.

For me, Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition is the best game, but only because it's my favourite game on the system.

So while that's my favourite, I also count Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and ThunderForce IV as my solid 'runner up' favourites.

I would also that Gunstar Heroes is pretty unmissable, for most people familiar with the library reading this.

Probably Ristar, in which it's so good, it should've had a sequel :(

Retrospectives

SG1000: Congo Bongo, Elevator Action. Ninja Princess and Shinnyu Shain Toorukun.

MKIII Favourite is clearly Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy and Seishun Scandal.

MD: Didn't play that system very much but Chikichiki Boys, Snow Brothers and Tatsujin were good games for the system.

Protoman

Castlevania Bloodlines is one of the very best in the series imo

It is, just for the music alone!  But I don't think it's quite on the masterpiece level of Rondo of Blood or Aria of Sorrow so I left it off my list with a heavy heart.

There are other titles like this, Dynamite Headdy, Alien Soldier, Monster World IV, Ranger-X, and many more that nearly make that top 5 list of course.

Probably Sonic 2, but also Pulseman & Mega Man: Wily Wars.

A lot of people talk about Wily Wars - but I always saw it as a 'not as good version' of the games than on NES/Famicom, and with added exoticism because it didn't come out in the States.

Am I wrong, is there something I'm missing?  I know it's 3 games on one, but so is Ninja Gaiden Trilogy / Ryukenden Tomoe on SNES/Super Famicom, and we know how that turned out...

Personally I think you could go with either version. For every change I find that I dislike, I find a change that I do like, while the Wily Tower mode gives it an extra something to help it stand out.

+ Certain Bosses are easier (Yellow Devil!)
+ Less Sprite Flickering
+ MM2 lets you keep E-Tanks upon a Game Over
+ Wily Tower Mode
+ Battery Saves/Multiple Save Files/Sound Test Mode
- Increased Boss Invincibility Frames
- Larger sprites make it harder to be pixel perfect for certain jumps

By all means you should own/play the originals first, but I never found it as bad as people make it out to be (assuming you're not playing the PAL version). At the very least, there was more effort put into it than NGT nor did the music take an objective hit in quality. I'd love to see a Legacy Collection 3 with it, & Bass, and the GB Titles.

Thanks that's all helpful for me - I never played through WW, but I might make a point to try and beat MM1 in Wily Wars then, given the NES/FC version is so rock hard in one playthrough!

Hope me asking this doesn't derail the thread in anyone's eyes.  It's a discussion forum after all, and I think it's on topic to justify each title's play value every now and then, just to mention..

I'd say Castlevania Bloodlines and the Langrisser games. The Langrisser series is one of my favos. I also like Alex Kidd and the Wonder Boy games.

Ecco the Dolphin is also a cool classic but I've not actually played it that much to judge it very well.

Sonic 2, Quackshot and Empire of Steel (The Steel Empire) are my top three.

About Wily Wars... where do I start? This game raises so many questions, OMG. So the only release it had in North America was via the Sega Channel, but (to my knowledge) that version was never dumped. So the repros we see are either a converted PAL version (does this game even play right on NTSC systems?) or a translated Japanese version, right? Does anyone have any confirmation that the Sega Channel version was any different from the PAL version aside from speed issues?

Also, I recently found out another version was dumped from this: https://www.destructoid.com/new-genesis-portable-includes-mega-man-the-wily-wars-237999.phtml

However, there is at least one issue where it locks up after defeating a boss in Mega Man 3 (which has been patched). Also, how else does this dump compare to the other ones? Could this be the long lost Sega Channel release (if that was ever different)?

TCRF didn't seem to answer any of my questions, but instead raised even more questions with this lockout text: https://tcrf.net/Mega_Man:_The_Wily_Wars Does that mean the Sega Channel rom is dumped? ???

I have some more interesting things to say about this game, but I think I'll save them for later. ;D
