anyone know if this exists? or was this a game planned on paper, designs, etc only. on a bunch of sites it's listed as a prototype but not much info on it's existance.

Info:
Mario and Donald King Kong Senior (later named Cranky Kong), or Donkey Kong Jr. and Stanley the Bugman, do battle again in the sequel and remake of the arcade series. The Player can choose to be Mario and play the four levels of Arcade Donkey as the first setting before going on to many new settings, each consisting of 4 levels. Or the player can choose Donkey Kong Jr. to face Stanley in the four levels of Donkey Kong Jr. before moving on to the new settings. The additional settings were the same for both characters, a mix of DK, DKjr, DK3 styles, and additional elements including some borrowed from Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. But, as Mario and DK Jr. interact with the environments differently, completing each level was a unique challenge for both characters. In addition, DK Sr. is apt to use simple tactics such as throwing things and utilizing his strength; requiring Mario to think on his feet and dodge many obstacle at once. While Stanley makes use of mechanical devices that runaround in set pattern and a tranquilizer gun aimed precisely at the player when he's not distracted by bugs, requiring DK Jr. to time jumps and movements to dodge the complex patterns of Stanley's attacking machines and approach only after provoking insects to distract Stanly. Both antagonists have their own set of minions to command (or provoke) also. All characters are once again competing for the affections of, or merely attempting to rescue, Pauline.
Mario turns bad guy, Stanley turns bad guy, who's next? Pauline?

Where did you get that long chunk of semi-shady information from?

i've seen this on a bunch of websites that list out info of every single nes game to exist in cart forms.  another title that i've seen was Donkey Kong 2.

one of them being only text only. and one of the sites i saw a few weeks ago, shows you what the chipboard should look like for every game, labels, label variations, etc. can't recall the website i wipe my history automatically by 5 days. so i can't go n try to back track where. for the NES.

today it was from uvlist.net (the 1st start post above)

i'll try n find the other few sites i saw this info on. i've read about this on more legit sites too.

\/ wikipedia.org

"Donkey Kong spawned two sequels, neither of which were as popular as the original arcade hit. In Donkey Kong Junior Donkey Kong was kidnapped by Mario and players had to control his son Donkey Kong Jr. to rescue him. In Donkey Kong 3 Donkey Kong broke into a greenhouse and got chased out by Stanley the Bugman, who carried a spray can to protect his greenhouse from Donkey Kong's insects. A music-based game titled Donkey Kong no Ongaku Asobi was originally planned to be released, but was eventually cancelled. Another title called Return of Donkey Kong was planned as a sequel, but was cancelled as well. This title had little information available, but it was confirmed that players would be able to control Donkey Kong as well as Mario.

Throughout the 1980s, eight Donkey Kong games were released for the Game & Watch platform, and in 1994 an LCD-based game was released for the Nelsonic Game Watch line.

In 1994, Nintendo produced a sequel for the Game Boy, simply called Donkey Kong. Some of its levels were based upon the Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior arcade games, and the enemies from the two games also returned. Donkey Kong's, Donkey Kong Junior's and Pauline's character designs were updated for this game. This was the first game to feature Donkey Kong wearing the monogrammed necktie, which has become a trademark.

In a recent interview for Official Nintendo Magazine UK, Shigeru Miyamoto openly admitted that the first Donkey Kong game was originally sketched as a Popeye game."

Return of Donkey Kong was a game announced for the NES in the Official Nintendo Player's Guide in 1987. Not much information is known about the title. Some believe that is a scrapped sequel to the original Donkey Kong, a precursor to the later Game Boy remake of Donkey Kong. Another possibility is that its an earlier name for Donkey Kong Classics, a two-in-one cartridge containing Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr..

There was a tiny blurb in Nintendo Power back in the day, but that's it. It seems the game was cancelled early in its development cycle. I'm skeptical of finding anything legitimate about it.

thats what i thought but i would LOVE to have the artwork related to the concept / designs that were at least draw up.  figured i'd ask considering i am a little rough on the details of this one.

Nothing was ever released. Even the screenshot accompanying the announcement in NP was just that from Donkey Kong 1. Unlike Earthbound or other such canceled NES games, this one was scrapped very early.

cool thanks for clearing the air, just had to ask.

With cancelled games, remember that they get cancelled for a good reason.  In all honesty, this game sounds pants and not a lot more than a bad pitch.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more of Stanley than his Smash Bros. trophy but this concept doesn't really hold up.  Why would you merge parts of Zelda into it?
Having three or more characters that are at times the hero and at others the enemy is poor design too.
It'd be interesting to see anything related to it, but the whole thing sounds nothing more than a loosely thought out pitch.

Return of Donkey Kong sounds like the Gameboy version to me.

its listed when you look it up. as for the nes. after dk jr but before dk3.  to see the concept art for it, there would have had to had been to show at a meeting.  people on ebay sell off concept art here n there but it's slim pickings and when you see it it's a collection of it from a publishing company. i remember seeing a capcom press kit, concept cells, slide show still frames, signed sketches, all in one from whenever street fighter 2 came out. it was of three games that were coming out at that time. only notable or memorable is sf2 when i saw this a month ago.

You're missing the point though.  There likely isn't concept art because it never got to that stage.  It sounds like it was simply mentioned to a journo one day and they went and wrote about it in the mag, hence it's listed.  The listing itself doesn't mean much and these things are never official.

This game was never officially announced, so I don't think you'll see any concept art for it, unfortunately.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm trolling, but even rumoured games that were never announced get listed and documented, because people can't go back in time to check whether they were ever officially announced or simply hinted at.

If someone had a sheet of graph paper sprites, that would at least be something, right?

I still think it sounds like a crippled idea, but wilder things have succeeded.
