I checked a computer with Windows 8 at my local electronics shop.

Win8 doesn't have a START menu any more? WTF?  :-[

Ate some Oreos and daydreamed about my lunch break.

The metro/tiles interface is the start menu.  Win8 isn't as bad as everyone seems to think it is, but it does require some training to understand how it works (which is a very bad thing...).

Seeks like all new stuff is made for idiots who like to "touch" buttons with their fingers.

As an aside, I hate how the MS Office products have started to look, with that dumb "ribbon". It takes me longer to do everything since the menu selections are all over the place and I always have to look around to find what I'm looking for. Then some of the menus disappear from the ribbon. Whose idea was all of this? Everything doesn't need an icon... ::)

But I don't like the metro interface...  :-[
However I think I'll (have to) get used to it in the future... All new PCs here have Win8 as a default now, so I have no choice. (I need Microsoft Office for work, so other OSs are a no-go.)

UglyJoe

There are a few software packages that can get you the Start button back in Win8.  There is apparently still code for a Start button in the OS, but it's hidden and/or incomplete.

Word has always been a mess, though.  Over the years, I've simply heard the complaints change from "I can't find this feature" to "I can't find this feature on this stupid toolbar" :P  I don't mind the ribbon, though.  It's pretty much just a tabbed toolbar that attempts to be context sensitive (ie, show table tabs when a table is selected).

Unless, of course, you want to draw a table. Then you have to figure out where that table tab is...oh, yeah, it's not there.  :P More clicks to do the same thing? Whoever came up with this should be shown the door.

That's another thing I'm not looking forward to: getting used to a new version of Office.  :-\

P

I agree. It's so stupid to make everyone have to learn a whole new interface with basically the same functions every single time you release a new version of an OS, office suit or desktop environment.

They should only change the interface layout if it's necessary for new useful functions or it really makes things more efficient IMHO.

Got my braces off! ;D Over two-and-a-half years of awkward pictures and not ever smiling open-mouthed paid off. :)
I like to glitch old VHS tapes and turn them into visuals for live music events. Check out what I'm working on - www.instagram.com/tylerisneat

If the weather's nice I'm also trying to spend some time on a beach nearby facing the Japanese Sea. It's actually very nice there.
