Yeah. I was expecting Star Wars not Star Love Story. This used to be my favorite one, but now I'm remembering why it wasn't so great. The love part is so overbearing and encapsulates Anakin's motive for turning to the dark side: to save Padme from dying. And here I thought it would've been his upbringing as a slave in a universe where slavery was supposed to be abolished while the senate does nothing to help his mother while he's forced to obey the Jedi council who tells him his feelings for his mother is his weakness while Chancellor Palpatine is angry at the Jedi and the senate for not seeing things his way and getting anything done.

I always hated the way Anakin becomes a Sith Lord in Episode 3. It felt completely unnatural and a spur of the moment.

Now that you mention it, Episode I did rely on practical effects more, probably because CG was in its early stages, but I have to admit, I was weirded out by that Yoda! Glad to see CGI Yoda looking faithful. I heard the original puppet was poorly stored and damaged, which is a big mistake because George Lucas always made it clear he was planning prequels and Yoda would, no doubt, be part of that.

Quote from: Protoman on October 11, 2019, 02:58:18 pmRey is pretty character-less if you ask me but that's another story for another day).
I chalk that up to the writing, and that's very regrettable because I think Daisy Ridley is a very good actor and the best parts of the new trilogy are the Kylo Ren and Rey moments.

But I don't want to talk about the new trilogy, because I have nothing but contempt for the Last Jedi.

Rey being a blank slate might be more of a trick to make her a cipher for the audience, as opposed to her own hero. Their logic could have been the younger generation doesn't have the nostalgia for Star Wars like their parents, so they had to make it accessible. Sadly, things are crafted not so much to entertain and wonder, but to hook as much as possible.

The new trilogy is fine. Didn't need to exist but you know, money. I'm curious to see how it resolves (and whatever jumps they make to link it to the first six movies), but it's a watch and move on with my life thing. At my age, few new movies crack my rewatch list and 7 & 8 aren't that. If anything, I will watch for set pieces (like Luke's showdown in 8) and jump around and then turn it off.

I watched the first six movies with my son. I intentionally fell asleep during Phantom Menace because the cringe was unreal. How did Lucas get such bad performances out of Liam Neeson and Natalie Portman? It would have been interesting to see a different director's effect on Hayden Christensen. I am convinced that Empire works so well because of Irvin Kershner's directing than anything else. I do not think Episode 3 is bad like 1 & 2 but it's still not great. The overarching storyline just isn't cohesive enough.

But that's the problem; Star Wars had always been rewatchable classics. Same with Terminator. I know it's no one's right to demand that top level quality of your favorite franchise, but it's still sad to see this happen. So I won't see the final Episode in theaters (I saw Last Jedi in theaters... blech :( I wish I would've seen TFA on the big screen, that was okay).

So you admit that it was intentional? ;D You physically slept because of your own bias against this film? ;D Not because it bored you to sleep? ;)

What is so wrong about Liam Neeson's acting? As for Natalie Portman, she is stale, but it seems intentional when she's Queen Amidala (probably so Keira Knightly/Sabé can replicate her easier), but outside of that there's no excuse.

Completely agree. It would've been interesting to see George continue to give the director chair to someone else every single Episode. This could've finally been Spielberg's chance to direct a Star Wars flick, but he didn't want to? :-\

The Irishman! Not as great as Goodfellas or Casino, very very good nonetheless. Great to see one last(?) great performance by my favorite, Al Pacino.

Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo

Riisa Naka is gorgeous! :-* She's like an Asian Jennette McCurdy.

P

She plays a minor role with a similar personality in "My Boss My Hero" which I also recommend.

So I watched Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones for the first time since seeing it in theaters. This used to be my favorite of the 3 back in the day, and I think I know why:

The Good:
-less Jar Jar
-Natalie Portman's acting isn't so stale in this one as it was in Episode I
-Christopher Lee
-Jango Fett was cool... for like 5 minutes
-Easier-to-follow plot than the Phantom Menace
-Obi-wan looks badass now, kinda like Dash Rendar

The Bad:
-'Attack of the Clones' is a name fitting for a b-movie horror... or a parody: 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!'
-Hayden Christensen's acting (I didn't remember it being so bad before, but good God! Why does it sound like he doesn't care?)
-first half drags on too long

Before watching AotC for the first time, I was under the impression the clones would be the bad guys. I was surprised to find the Jedi accepting the clone army (even 16-year old me knew this was a bad idea!). Also, did the clone army come with the arsenal, or did they already have all those gunships? And if they did, who maintained them? Droids? Not really a rant, just curious about the logistics of all that. ;D

Let me get this out of the way: I dislike when films or TV shows replace actors (I know sometimes it's inevitable), but it's just so jarring. I had already gotten invested in Jake Lloyd being the younger incarnation of the future Force choker that we all come to know and love, and now they swap him with this emotional wreck? Now that Jake's old enough, can't Lucas do another revision? :P

Rewatching the bounty hunter chase scene, I was instantly put off by the cliché bounty-hunter-gets-killed-by-his-boss-mid-sentence scene (what's the name of this trope?). And did her being a changeling have anything to do with anything? Or was it just for show? Did I miss something?

I remember liking the revisit to Tatooine. But now I can pause it and really look at the homestead in detail! The actors for Owen and Beru were so fitting. Owen even looks like the kinda guy who'd end up being a douche later on in life! ;D

And now a big rant: Jango Fett: does George not like armored bounty hunters? It wasn't that his fight scene with Samuel L. was too short; it was that it was too stupid: so Mace drops his saber, Fett jumps for it--what?! Is he collecting war memorabilia or trophies of his kills or something? Why not just shoot it? Then he gets trampled. Oh well.

What else?

Even back in the day, I felt this was the first Star Wars movie that didn't feel 'Star Warsy' and I couldn't place my finger on it. And I still quite can't. It's just that something feels 'off' like everyone wasn't trying as hard.

Phantom Menace felt fun and interesting, even though it was hard to follow: it had memorable music and scenes: Duel of the Fates, the Gungan underwater city, pod-racing, the spliced climax of the Naboo space battle, Theed Royal Palace, and the lightsaber duel with Darth Maul (let's forget the droid invasion, shall we?)

Attack of the Clones had a Romeo Juliesque 'love' motif interspersed throughout the film, a bad CGI picnic scene (even the music here is ditzy and cringy), and a cool arena battle. Oh yeah, and the conveyer belt! I think that this was supposed to be this film's magnum opus, but I'm not sure this heavily CGI sequence really did as well as The Battle of Hoth or even the speeder bike chase on Endor when they came out.

The final duel with Dooku (I never knew him as Tyrannus until years after the films) was pretty one-sided despite being two... or three? versus one. But it made sense: Anakin was an idiot, Obi-wan is now fighting the master of his master and not just some Sith lackey who doesn't know force lightning (whom Obiwan got lucky when beating him), and Yoda had to babysit both these guys while simultaneously taking on Dooku while also being really really old.

Also, did Dooku know who Palpatine was? This still confounds me. ??? whatever, I don't care anymore.

I don't know if this is my favorite prequel anymore. :-\

P

I have nothing against Jar Jar, although he could never replace the robot duo as a comic relief character. And the plot is one of the thing I prefer in Phantom Menace. I had it on tape and watched it many times when it was still new, understanding more and more of the plot. The other two prequels are not as hard to understand but also not as interesting plotwise.
Obi-Wan was indeed cool in Clones though. It was fun just to see a young version of the old mentor in episode I, but he didn't really shine until episode II and III.
"Attack of the Clones" is really a weird title, and misleading since the clones aren't really the attacking bad guys yet. I suppose the movie had to have a title that refers to the "clone wars" that Luke mentions in the first movie, but it's kind of stupid as that doesn't really start yet.

I guess the clone army would probably include clones responsible for some of the non-combat work as well. Either way it would cost money to maintain, so it can't be totally self-sustained. The empire uses clones just as a complement to their army, and storm troopers comes both as clones and as recruits.

Yeah one of the biggest complaints I have about episode II and III is how unconvincing Anakin's transformation is. He is just a whiny little brat who don't like to do as he is told, and is just dumb enough to be fooled by uncle Palpatine. His slave background isn't showing at all, and he has no reason to join the dark side other than being an emotional moron.

Yoda is always badass in all movies however, and now you finally get to see him fight. He's probably the easiest character to use, since there is never a reason to change anything about him, and he works well as CG. As long as they have Frank Oz to play his voice.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Not as good as the first two, but I still enjoyed this. Loved seeing Keanu Reaves and Alex Winter reprise their roles.

Night of the Living Dead

My God, all the Resident Evil references! :o

MWK

Which one Jedi? Tom Savini's or the original from '68 by Romero?

Jedi Master Baiter

There was another one?! Blasphemy!

Edit Hey! Just looked up the '90s version. I wonder if Rebecca was based on Patricia Tallman? Does this one have more RE references? Maybe I'll see this one down the line.

MWK

Oh. You should definitely watch the '90s version if you haven't seen it!
You're gonna love them both versions 8)
