How does a small group of programmers even DO something like this? I mean, manufacturing the cartridges alone isn't easy or cheap!

They probably won't make profit and use most of their free time for it.
Manufacturing the carts shouldn't be the biggest problem. You just need a company that can make plastic parts. I imagine the base cost is quite high, so if you only order like 500 or 1000 copies it's gonna cost a lot per piece.

The chaps behind this and Beggar Prince are going to be attending the Byte Back retro gaming event in the UK. Heard they will be bringing several copies of their games to sell so I'll be picking up a few. I'll most likely do an entry for the whole event in my blog, its around the 9th March.
