The Paper Mario series (or at least the first two) are very underrated, especially when it comes to their music. Thousand Year Door more or less nailed it with a wide range of quirky and fun tunes but the boss battles are where the soundtrack really comes alive. Take, for instance, Macho Grubba's theme and Bowser's theme.

Props to Magnus von Grapple, as well.

I really like the music played in the game "Shadowgate", it has wonderful tunes playing all the way through.

The BIT.TRIP series of games on WiiWare tend to have pretty great music. It's all chiptunes and it's all fun! The games themselves are awesome (but hard) too.

I really need to check those out.  They seem fun.  I also like the Mushihimesama (not Futari. The original) final boss music. You guys should look it up. I'll post a link when I get home.

A lot of old games produced in Europe seem to have those arpeggios too. I think they did it in an attempt to have chords, but it just doesn't work IMO.

Anyway, I've got a lot of favorite game soundtracks, but my favs right now are Darius, Gaiares, Valis III (the Genesis version), The Ninja Warriors, and Midnight Resistance (the Genesis version).

I definately love nitro man's theme in Mega Man 10.

The opening of the original is very nostalgic for me.

Another underrated one is Stage 1 theme in Android Assault on the sega CD. Love the guitar part the most.
