I'm playing SPACE INVADERS!
For a decent highscore!
Until now I'm just 5,150!
Now Playing: Dragon Ball Fusions, Yggdra Union

Spelunker

Short game with some really annoying ways to die, but ultimately a great classic game.  It reminds me of Donkey Kong in some ways.  It's short (only 4 levels), tough due to some stupid controls and level designs, and easy once you know how to clear the levels.

My high score: 287310.

Dengeki Big Bang! also known as Clash at Demonhead.

UglyJoe

Quarth.

Finished this one, I think.  There's 9 stages, but you can choose whichever one you want to start from.  I played through all the levels and finally lost near the end of the 9th stage (argh!).  So, I kept starting over on the 9th stage and managed to finish it after 10 or so tries.

Now I'm seeing a screen that says GREAT in big letters and has a crowd of people repeatedly throwing my spaceship up into the air and catching it.  Looks like an ending to me  ;D

JC

Hahaha. That's funny: GREAT. What an ending. I played Bubble Bobble, FDS version on cart. I love Bubble Bobble's ending...what's the most important magic in the world?

I also played some of the games on about 30 pirates and multicarts I got recently. I got one multicart that plays "Unchained Melody" on the selection screen. It's simply amazing! I love that song and it's so awesome to hear a real song as 8-bit. I think there are only about four or five real songs adapted for 8-bit, one on this multicart, one on Rainbow Islands, and two on Soap Panic.

If you buy one of those dance-mat Famiclones, you get more 'real life' 8 bit songs :P.

Sunday Funday for the NES had a karaoke thing in that played "a sing-a-long of a song by Christian pop band 4Him."

There's also this one Famicom game made after some Japanese band.  It's a really bad game and it loops an 8-bit rendition of one of their songs over and over again.  I'll look it up when I get home.

JC

Cool. It'd be neat to do a write-up on these, with music samples. I think Famicom Karaoke must have some real songs in that series as well, though I think it's a lot of Japanese stuff we wouldn't necessarily recognize. I think Karaoke has Jingle Bells.

The game I was thinking of was Seikima II: Akuma no Gyakushu, based on the band Seikima IIFamily Computer 1983 - 1994 doesn't say that it's their songs in the background (I thought that it did), but it does say the music is repetitive.

Just beat Earthworm Jim 3 and Guevara. Both of them are really fun games.

Earthworm Jim 3 has, iirc, six levels. They go quick, but the game is great. It's got just enough of a challenge to make it fun, where most pirate originals are either too easy or too hard. The last two levels are cool because it adds a new element, this dog you have to help get through the level.

Guevara is really cool, and it reminds me a lot of today's games, where it's impossible to die because you just respawn in the same spot you died. So, the challenge is less about living and more about dying the fewest times possible. It's a tough one, though, because you've got all kinds of enemies thrown at you.
