Cosmos Cop (Famicom)

The version of the game on the Asder 20-in-1 is incredibly easy, unlike the version of the game on the Caltron 6-in-1 (NES). I only managed to survive the first level on the Caltron version a handful of times, while I just completed the Asder version on my first time playing it. I don't know how many differences there are between the two versions, as I haven't played the Caltron version since selling mine about two years ago.

But there is one HUGE difference: the gun only shoots single shots in the Caltron version. In the Asder, you get either a two or three shot burst for tapping the button, or you can just hold down the A button for continuous fire. The hit detection is a little sketchy in the game, so the kind of precision shooting the Caltron version demands is really pretty unfair. In that version, I pretty much gave up on the gun and only fired the ring weapon; since that weapon has both limited ammo and a slower firing rate, I spent much more time dodging enemies than trying to kill them. In the Asder version, I just put myself in a good  position against an enemy and sprayed a stream of bullets in their general direction. One bullet was bound to find its mark! And it worked, over and over until I had cut through the game like a hot knife through butter.

Top Hunter (Famicom)

This is a pretty easy light gun game on the Asder 20-in-1. I beat it on my first try. You shoot wolves trying to run off with your flock of sheep, trying to survive for some set length of time. Your sheep are reset at the start of each round, and after 20 rounds the game offers you its "Congratiations" and gives you a single screen of credits with some repeating music.

Well, Nintendo Age's 2014 Beat Every NES Game challenge has started. I kicked off my new year by beating 12 games. Kind of crazy to nearly match my total from last year in one day, but then again these were all games I knew well and am pretty good at. The only achievement of sorts was beating Duck Tales 2 on Normal difficulty. It was my second time beating the game, and I played it through on Easy the first time. I also knocked out Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers 2, Friday the 13th, Jaws, Mega Man 3, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Monopoly, Paperboy, RoboCop, and all three Super Mario Bros. games.

I also beat mega man 3 (actually rockman 3), a week ago.... It took me around 15 hours, but it was my first time playing. Had problem with some bosses and on two levels when you play the bosses again. Wily stages took their time too, and Dr Wily until I found out the easy way to beat him. I uploaded the videos yesterday, going to blog about it tomorrow....

Well, it took me a lot more than 15 hours to figure out Mega Man 3 my first time. Of course, I was a pre-teen when I first played the first five Mega Man games, and I practically memorized them by middle school. It still took me about an hour and a half to ice Mega Man 3 yesterday, and that was with only three or four deaths (and no game-overs).

I got back to the grind already this morning, as I knocked out Hogan's Alley, Home Alone, Panic Restaurant, Spot, and Wild Gunman for the NA challenge.

Hogan's Alley?  I didn't know you could finish it.  Granted I only play Game C but it goes on and on and on.

I beat Godzilla this afternoon. An easy game, but it does take over 2 hours to complete.

Neither Hogan's Alley nor Wild Gunman have a definitive end. With repetitive, arcade-style games like those, NA's challenge is just typically to loop the game and get the high score. That's really a pretty low bar for most of those game. I went ahead and played Hogan's Alley until I was named a "sharp shooter" in each of the three phases, which meant that I'd at least doubled the high scores in each phase and played two to three times as many stages as "needed." With Wild Gunman, I actually racked up 100,000 points in each of the three modes, which was almost 10 times the preset high score. As it was, I was still completely done with both games in less than half an hour.

No great bragging rights on either of those, and I wouldn't even personally count them as "beaten" on my personal list. But I wanted to do a couple of quick, easy light gun games this morning, and I was pleased to find a couple of black-box classics still on the need-to-be-played list.

For some reason I never learnt to play light gun games. Even on Saturn I rather use the mouse for Virtua Cop, LOL. I currently do have a famicom lightgun for practice if I wanted. I played Gun Sight with it recently, I think not many know that Gun Sight has lightgun support. Blogged about it too, fun game and somewhat of a hidden gem in my opinion. Maybe I should try to beat it? ;) For my own "beat every famicom game" challenge. That would take a lifetime.
The unrewarding thing with the NA challenge is that the people who beat the games quickly are the ones that have already beaten them many times, so it doesn't give them much.

I knocked off Desert Commander for the Nintendo Age NES challenge today. It's kind of an interesting change of pace to beat up on childhood favorites for the challenge.

Your criticisms are true for especially the first week of January, which is kind of the "gold rush" season of the challenge. But the obvious classics are usually long-gone by the end of January at latest, and the hardcore players who stay with the thread for the rest of the year are often slogging through some obscure stuff. Fifteen of the sixteen games I beat for the challenge last year were ones I'd never beaten before, even if I'd owned half of them since childhood and had already seen the last stages of most of those. Of course, I didn't have much choice there given that I only joined the thread halfway through the year, but the idea of playing through the obscure games is probably my favorite part of the challenge.

I've wondered about a spinoff Beat Every Famicom Game, but that would probably be much less successful here. I suspect the amount of interest, if not ability, to beat all of the hundreds of J-RPGs, adventure games, and all the boring crap like the horse racing betting games would be very low here. And of course this board is much smaller to begin with.

We'd have to limit ourselves to playable famicom games, or at least games with English translations. I think it would be interesting to see if anyone could beat famicom exclusive games like Ninja Jajamaru Kun, Ninja Hattori Kun, Warpman, Super Xevious, or Transformers Convoy No Nazo (I think this last game is practically impossible without save states). Holy Diver is also really hard on actual hardware without save states.
There's enough of playable famicom games that would keep us occupied for the full year, without having to go to horse racing games.
Also it would be interesting to see if someone could beat a game like Shadowgate or Deja Vu in Japanese, if they are experienced with the English version.

I've beaten Ninja Hattori Kun and Transformers: Convoy No Nazo before. No cheats used, played on AV Famicom, etc.
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...
