I have both.... But I can't decide, even though I've been able to play them both so much... Voted the 3rd option.

Only the SNES could have brought us EarthBound.
Actually, any system with a 16-bit processor could have brought us EarthBound, it was just Nintendo's SNES that actually did :P

Technically true, but Nintendo had Shigesato Itoi (creator of the MOTHER series), not Sega.

Technically true, but Sega had the secret clone of Shigesato Itoi sold to them in 1968 for $40 million, who was exterminated after the release of MOTHER 2.

Gogarth how can you choose SNES MK with it's lame green blood?

SNES was better in terms of graphics and production values on most aspects but I still think Megadrive had better music and many games we got were more fun than the stuff that appeared on SNES.

In Europe Megadrive had already got a great foothold and was like a super powered PC engine, still simple playability but with arcade graphics.  In a way it was the best of both worlds from 8-16 bit for me.  But after a while it got tired, SNES had some amazing flagship games like Starfox and after so long megadrive games seemed pants.

I don't think it's always good to compare ports though, as usually whatver is lead platform works better.  I think Earthworm Jim is better on MD than on SNES, but SF2 is way better on SNES.

Megadrive had better shooters I thinka nd arcade ports in general as SEGA were strong back then.  Though SNES is worth it just for the Mario collection alone in my view.  Over in Japan the SFC had many RPGs to be proud of if you like those kind of things.  Personally, I think Chrono Trigger is lame and unpolished.  A great story doesn't make a great game on it's own if you ask me.

My Genesis and my SNES sit right next to each other. Their games are stored on the same shelf, and they even share an RF switch. This reflects my feelings toward the two consoles perfectly. They are the Yin and Yang of the sixteen bit genre, equal but opposite halves of one kick-ass whole.

But still, If I had to pick one I'd pick the SNES.
Sub Terranea and Bubba 'n' Stix are great, but they'll never beat KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Manto or Yoshi's Island.

SNES FTW! 8) I seriously can't find lots of great Genesis games for the console compared to the SNES. Here is a list of some of my favorite SNES titles; Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania X, Super Mario Kart, Super Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-stars, Famicom Tantei Club part 2, Mario Paint, Congo's Caper, Joe & Mac and lots more that I can't think of at the moment. What about my favorites for the Sega genesis? Umm lets see.... Sonic 1 2 and 3, Aladdin, Toy Story, The Lion King, Ristar...hmmm... I dunno I just can't see as much good games on the Genesis as on the SNES. :-\ ;D

I think the problem is that there are a lot of good games on the Genesis, they're just hard to notice sometimes. Here's my list of a few of the best Genesis games you've never heard of: (or at least never played.)

Ronald McDonald's Treasureland Adventure. Just going by the title, it sounds like total garbage, right? Wrong. It's M.C. Kids if you played as Ronald and it was ten times better.

Gadget Twins. Sounds vaguely like soft core porn, but is actually an excellent shooter.

Decap Attack. Reminiscent of Doki Doki Panic!, it's based on a Japan-only game about some guy in a turban, they just changed the sprites. Now you're a mummy or something.

Viewpoint. Another great shooter, this one forces a 3D perspective Zaxxon-style. But better.

Toki: Going Ape Spit. Awesome not only because the title is a borderline-obscene pun. Imagine Bonk's Adventure if it was a shooter. And Bonk was an ugly, ugly gorilla.

Strider. Take down communism in a purple one-sie.

Rocket Knight Adventures. You've probably heard of this one, but I bet you've never played it. You should, especially if you like games about possums. It's easily the best possum-based game on the Genesis, beating Awesome Possum by a long shot.

There you have it. I thought they were all pretty good, but maybe I'm just easy to please. You be the judge.

I PREFER the SNES, but

I dont really care for either. It's my least favorite "set" of systems.

nintendodork

I agree with nurd, one of the reasons they don't appeal to me is because they came out just before I was born, which makes them not quite retro yet, but they aren't new either.

They're almost 20 years old (hell, the Genesis IS 20) and that's not retro?  Gimme a break...

Retro gaming doesn't just mean old, it was a different approach to gaming altogether. The Playstation will never be "retro" or "old school" in the world of gaming imo.

Tell that to me again in ten years.
