Good choice on Jigoku Gokuraku Maru, it's an easy one to no-death so you'll probably get it on your next play.

Right you were, got the no-miss clear on my very next run. It was still a somewhat sloppy run as I slipped and fell a few times in the towers of Stages 3 and 5, but it got the job done. Could still shave off several minutes off my time were I to get really serious with it. Very fun game.

Just had my first taste of my new Gimmick! cart. I knew it had a great soundtrack, since I've had a pirate of it for years. But hearing those expansion audio channels for the first time... WOW! I think I had an ear-gasm.

Good then it probably is genuine! :)

Played TwinBee 3 for the first time this weekend.  Seriously fun shooter, but I am way out of practice.  Haven't mashed buttons like that since I was in grade school.

I must be the only one who's not that big on Gimmick's soundtrack, besides the intro theme. It's amazing from a technical standpoint, undoubtedly, but most the stage themes just sounded kinda "there" to me, they didn't really stick with me like a Natsume soundtrack, or Journey to Silius.

Beat Holy Diver, after spending ages stuck on the 4th boss/4th stage in general. Probably the hardest game I've ever played (not counting pieces of crap/genres I naturally suck at), but man was it satisfying. Can't wait to play it again tomorrow.

Man, I know a lot of people have said Holy Diver is tough. But if Nightstar of all people can get stuck on it, it must really be brutal.

As for my last uses of the Famicom, it's nothing super exciting. I got a small pile of crap games bundled with a cheap AV Fami I snapped up off Ebay. I went ahead and tested through the games yesterday, which included my first time playing Major League (it's baseball...), as well as my first time playing FC versions of Adventure Island and Super Mario Bros.

My thought exactly! Gotta play that game sometime.

Recently I haven't played anything at all. Been busy moving and stuff. I don't even remember the last Famicom game I played.

Nightstar699

I just got done beating it again (I've done so maybe 6 times now, I believe) and yes, I will still stand by it as the single hardest game I've played.

I gotta admit, when I was watching Funkdoc speedrun this game at AGDQ, and he was claiming it to be the hardest NES game and "what Battletoads wishes it could be when it grows up", I thought he was exaggerating and that it didn't look too hard, but then I delved into it, and.... yeah. It's insane. Most the game is tough, but reasonable, however....

The 4th boss of Holy Diver is the single most random, cruel, and unforgiving part of a game I've ever encountered. If you haven't played to this part, basically, it's a giant pillar comprised of three sections that you fight atop a few moving platforms. It shoots bullets from each segment, and if you get hit in the wrong way, you are knocked off and die immediately. It sounds rough, but oh does it get more sinister:  Firstly, its firing pattern is pseudo-random, there isn't a reliable consistent strat for dealing with it. But the worst part of all is that the only effective spell against it is Overdrive, and when you equip Overdrive... its bullets turn invisible half the time due to sprite overload. Yep, not only is the firing pattern random, but you aren't even allowed to see some of the bullets on top of that. It's truly the hardest fight I've ever faced, and I have yet to do it without continuing at least once... speaking of, the stage itself is long and grueling, and when you run out of lives? Yep, you're starting that fucker over again.

...Besides that though, I've memorized the game so very few other parts give me issue. There's a luck-based room near the end of the game, but it isn't quite as random as the 4th boss. In fact just now I didn't die at all on stages 1, 2, and 3, and only had one death each on 5 and 6, so.... if it wasn't for the relentless 4th boss, this would have been a very clean run. Maybe someday.

Edit: Despite all my bitching in this post, I love Holy Diver. Really love it. Like, I think it's better than any of the 8-bit Castlevanias, apart from maybe II on Game Boy. One thing I really like about Holy Diver is how every magic spell has their uses so you find yourself switching between them constantly, none of them feel pointless.

I played a little bit of Rockman 4 Minus Infinity this afternoon. I had a friend over, and I wanted to show it off.

The last game I played before my Twin Famicom broke... I don't really remember! But I do remember that I was about to try my new purchase, Cocoron, when I discovered it wasn't working anymore :/

Nightstar699

Ugh, Cocoron is an unfortunate one to miss out on. Remarkable game. I don't know what I'd do if my AV Fami ever broke, I should probably put aside some money to replace it if it ever breaks.

I've been playing Holy Diver lately... lots, and lots of Holy Diver, to the point where I think I've mastered a consistent 1CC of the game. (I've 1CC'd it 5 times now, so I think it's safe to say) The 4th boss, while still partially luck-based, has a certain "rhythm" you can get into to dodge its bullets while delivering damage.

I just had my first taste of Taiyou no Yuusha Firebird. It's pretty decent, but a bit light on the difficulty aside from the bosses (but I only played the first two stages).

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why I've got two of them now. I also have two NES-101s for my 72-pin games. I'm not a big believer in hoarding lots of doubles, but I think keeping a backup console around is justifiable when you've invested as much in games as some of us have.

I played a bit of Gimmick! tonight. I decided to compare the sound side-by-side with my old "Pipe V" bootleg. (I did want to make sure it still worked, as I decide what I want to do with it now that I no longer need it.) The pirate version still sounds pretty cool, but of course it's not in the same league with an original 5B's soundtrack. I only wanted to play through the first couple of levels, but I left the game on to continue listening to music as I checked the forum.
