Been on something of a Konami kick as of late.  Picked up Salamander over the weekend and have been (slowly) making progress.  Another super fun game from a quality company.

Well, seeing Nightstar in this thread inspired me to go and beat Ninja Crusaders for the NES Challenge. It's my third year in a row taking the credit for that... mostly because nightstar isn't active on Nintendo Age anymore. This one would probably be gone on New Year's Day every year if he was. I like to grab the sword and use it for the whole game, because it makes the bosses drop so quickly. Once I got to the final boss, I shapeshifted into a dragon and killed it with impunity. I have an easier time getting through the stage with a no-range attack than I do surviving that second form of the final boss.

Interesting strats, Jackson, I'll be honest I don't use the sword much. 2-1 and 3-1 are the only stages where I regularly usually use the sword, I prefer the Bo for the most part, it drops the bosses slightly less quick but still packs a wallop. For the final stage, however, I do switch to the shuriken, and then grab the kusarigama before the final boss. Here's my strat for his second form:

I kill form one when he's to the right side of the screen, so form 2 will immediately fire off a spread shot. I get in about 5-ish hits, then retreat to the left side, twitching backwards to get in a couple hits at a time as I do so. Once he chases you to the left side, he'll do the stabbing pattern of the 3rd boss. Crouch the first hit, and then immediately jump the second hit. He will walk backwards for a sec, I get in some more hits at this time, then he approaches and does the stab one more time. After dodging that, I jump over him (he'll fire off another spread shot), and retreat to the right side of the screen, again, getting in as many hits as I can along the way. Then jumping over him once he reaches the right side (I guess he doesn't do the stab at all on the right side of the screen?) and retreating to the left side, hitting along the way of course. From there he'll go in for the stab yet again, rinse and repeat. It takes quite a few hits with the kusarigama, yeah, but I feel a lot safer with the shuriken for that stage.

God I wish I had a capture card so I can upload some of my strategies and runs, I feel like I'm explaining this all wrong. Ah well. Anyway here's my achievement of the day.

No-death run completed of Ryukenden III, I was quite proud of this one. Although I'd consider Gaiden II to be the hardest of the trilogy when it comes to regular play, for no-deathing, III is absolutely brutal for one reason, and one reason only: They give you JUST BARELY enough time to complete the final stage, take a look at my timer in the screenshot there.  I was absolutely hauling ass through the stage, and the final boss, and yet it was still close. Also I'd say the final boss gauntlet is the hardest of the trilogy.

I picked up a copy of Time Zone on Ebay a few days ago, since I had some Ebay Bucks to blow and a decently-priced Buy-it-Now popped up. I had my first taste of the game last night, and I enjoyed it considerably. It reminds me a lot of Yo! Noid, but I'd have to say Time Zone does it better.

Played King's Knight: http://japanspel.blogspot.com/2015/02/famicom-friday-kings-knight.html
It was frustrating but not completely bad... not that I bothered trying to beat it, don't have that much time.

Went for a long run tonight, as I felt a little bummed out, and wanted something to do.

Afterwards, I came back home and finished the work I had to do for my job, and then I sat down to play some Famicom as a treat.  I picked Jumpin Kid, a game I wanted to play for awhile, and had purchased from Sean several months back (maybe over the summer, I forget), but never had time to really play until now.  Fun game, took me a bit to get used to the controls and what not, but nice.  Too short though, but definitely one of those games that is worth playing.

I had Spartan-X in the console (got it the other day), so when I started my PC up I decided on a whim to start the Famicom as well and play while I waited. Ended up clearing the first loop.

Never did beat the game when I had it as a kid...

I never felt much excitement over the first one, but I might pop it in over the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, as I plan to do a lot of gaming and drinking.  But as for the second one, I actually wanted to play it last night, but couldn't find it, and since I didn't have a lot of time to play, I then opted for Jumpin Kid instead.  Maybe this weekend I will pop in Spartan X 2, that is a game I wanted to play for awhile.

I think the first game is just utterly charming, despite being simple. I like how a single loop takes like five minutes and boss fights can be over in seconds.

Also, I just cleared Jigoku Gokuraku Maru. Yay. Died a few times, might go for the no-miss clear.

Spartan X 2 is the same way in that regard... it takes between 7-9 minutes to clear, and the bosses are similarly short, but somehow there's a bit more depth to it. I love both games, though I still need to re-buy the 2nd one CIB, though it costs a fortune. And I really wish it had a hard mode rather than just easy and normal.

Good choice on Jigoku Gokuraku Maru, it's an easy one to no-death so you'll probably get it on your next play. Did you use any chip on the final boss' 2nd form? He's a tough one to beat hair-only.

Last Famicom game I played was Mitsume Ga Tooru, no-death beaten. IMO I'd have to say this is probably the best Famicom exclusive out there. Gonna play Little Nemo next.

Switching back and forth between Dracula-kun and Ninja Turtles Manhattan Project.

Konami's Famicom output, folks.  Wow!

I had a few spare hours tonight, and started going through my Famicom games - I was going to play whatever game of substance I could find first.  I found Little Nemo, a childhood favorite, and began playing it but it froze up in the middle of stage 3, so I decided to call it quits.  I had beaten that game before anyways, dozens of times.  I then went to my extra stash of games and grabbed a hand full, one of which was Spartan X 2, which I had wanted to play the other day.  I decided to give it a go, and just completed it a few minutes ago.  It is a nice game, but imo definitely not worth the price of admission.  It is too short, imo, but fun just the same.  I wonder what game I will play tomorrow?

Yeah, if Spartan X-2 fleshed out the levels a bit, beefed up the bosses, and added a hard mode, I'd say it'd rank up there with the best on the system. As it is, it's still a good game that definitely captures the charm of the original even if it takes the theme/setting/tone in a completely different direction. Also, I absolutely adore the music in SX2.

Tough luck on Little Nemo, I hope that doesn't happen with my game... I haven't popped it in yet, by the way, I'm playing through GS Mikami on Super Famicom first because I really missed this game, then Little Nemo afterwards.

I did, yeah. And then I finished him with a sissy "hide in the corner and come out to attack whenever possible"-tactic. I don't think the last form would be tough to beat even with just hair, just time-consuming because the vulnerable bit isn't always low enough to hit and it's hitbox seems pretty small vertically, making it tough to hit with the hair that has similarly small hitbox vertically.

Just got done clearing GUN-DEC, no-deaths.

Easily in my top 10, ridiculously good game.
