On topic: People that equate socialism with communism with Stalinism.
Most kids in American high school don't get this either. :P

As a high school teacher, I agree with you. I plan to address this because as a Socialist, people thinking I love Stalin is vomit inducing.

Jedi I've seen two of those bands live and they sound sucked horribly.

My brother is in one of those bands. :P

Score one for awkwardness!!! :D

Why do you believe in Socialism?

As an aside, most Americans have no idea the our government isn't a democracy, but is rather a Constitutional Republic. Amazing, especially given that the Pledge of Allegiance states, "...and to the Republic for which it stands..."

petik1

That really pisses me off. Especially when my old history teacher would say its a democracy to link it to democrats. I wanted to smash my head into the nearest wall when ever he decided to beat down our political opinions. He even called us communists because we doubted obama

cubelmariomadness

I hate that too. The sub comes in, and instead of doing the teacher asks them to do, he says, "We're going to read the newspaper today."
Then flipped straight to the opinions and started yelling about how Obama is going to ruin the USA.
Sorry folks.

Which one? haha I meant the sound, as in the actual mix was muddled and difficult to make out the individual instruments. I didn't mean to imply the bands themselves sucked. Not my bag though.

I believe that the role of government is to provide for its people, and that socialist states provide for all rather than just the wealthy and powerful, like capitalist states. That said, I'm not a Communist by any means. Sweden and Norway have the closest systems to what I would advocate.

Hope im not sounding like a dumb*ss but from the tidbits of info about communism and socialism, ive come to think that in a perfect world, they would work perfectly, but we have free will and a desire to be different than others. Capitalism, as i see it, is what the real world hands you. Its rough for those at the bottom of the social classes, but thats apparently how the world works. We will never have a perfect government. In fact, i find those as opposites. Governments are constantly changing and growing or shrinking, while perfection will never have to change. Oh well, at least theres video games to distract us from the ignorance and plain stupidity of those who run governments worldwide.

ericj

The only way one government would work for all the people is if there were only ONE person left on the Earth and he or she got to set it up.  :D

Oh I see, you meant to put  "the sound sucked horribly." It looked like "they sound" or "they sucked" "horribly." :P

And socialism works better in a smaller country.

Yeah that typo made it unclear sorry haha. I agree with you, socialism works better with smaller and homogeneous populations.

But see socialism and communism do nothing to limit free will and individual expression. I think the problem is you, like many people, are thinking of socialism as the USSR or Cuba. Those states were ruled by communist parties, but were very far from communism. Communism as Marx described it is a classes, stateless, Utopian society where the people work for the benefit of the whole and not for individual gain. So yes, that would never work as it ignores human nature. The best descriptor for the style of government of the USSR would be something like "totalitarian socialism". I'm a democratic socialist; I believe in free and fair elections, individual liberties, and other democratic values; but I also believe that the state should provide a comprehensive system of social welfare. Jobs, health care, national defense, etc. should all be provided by the state.

Sorry, didn't mean to make this a tl;dr snoozefest.

Are you kidding? That was a great read. I, and I hope others, enjoy stuff like this. Helps me get more points of views on topics. Like I said, I dont have a whole lot of info on communism and socialism, marxism, and whatever there may be, i just based what I said off of what I hear from advocates and opponents of them. A perfect world would be great, but, free will, desire, and the nature of our being will not allow it to exist.
