Do you have a citation for this one? Emerson is my favorite philosopher and I've never read that -- or don't remember reading it.

I never understood why, even from the start, there was an effort to push video games toward artistic realism, as if a video game couldn't be at their best unless they imitated real life in action and imagery.

Well, shading in sprites was as close as they could get to 3D and realism in the 80s.  People are always going on about how reslistic today's games are.  Just you wait until the day we play games Tron-style comes.
