I've never beaten Frankenstein, Death, or Dracula without the holy water. I think I could probably get through Frankenstein and Dracula using the axe, but Death sure introduces a lot of random elements...

I beat Frankenstein using the Cross the other day and it wasn't too bad... but yeah, the Death fight is just insane. It's funny how Ninja Gaiden 1 and Castlevania 1 are about equal difficulty-wise when it comes to playing them normally, but then if you try to low% run them... Ninja Gaiden 1 is just a tad bit harder than a usual playthrough, while Castlevania 1 is monumentally more difficult.

I don't think there's a strategy as such to beating Death with the Cross, you just have to be pretty freakin' expert at it dodging and attack simultaneously, with luck thrown in.

I've done it once when an enemy unexpectedly dropped the cross right before the fight and I got stuck with it, I sure as hell wouldn't plan on beating him with it any other time.

I've been playing more Dr. Mario multiplayer with my better half lately - I can win more often these days, at one stage she got too good at the game for me to even try to beat her, it was almost maddening!

My wife is an occasional video game player (we a lot of board games together though). Puzzle games are her favorite type - Dr. Mario used to be our go-to game but I recently got Puyo Puyo on FC specifically for its head-to-head mode. Love it.

Rolling Thunder. I picked up a copy from senseiman finally, and it's amazing how much better it sounds than the NES version. (Although it's a trip that the graphics and gameplay are completely identical.)

Ice climber on Famicom. Reached mountain 15 with a score of 398140.

DDCecil

Akumajou Densetsu. Just picked up Alucard and left the great Grant behind (I love his weapon on this version! Free throwing knife!)

Just finished Wai Wai World 2 - SOS!! Paseri Jou for the first time! Loved the little homages to Road Fighter and Frogger!

Kitouski

Just played through Hello Kitty World... seriously just a much better Balloon Kid, really enjoyed it.

Just beat Makaimura, both loops. I beat Ghosts n Goblins as a child, however, it's crazy how much harder the JP version is - particularly stage 6 of the second loop. Proud moment.

Wow! Nicely done! What makes the JP version so much more difficult?

It caught me by surprise, big time! I think there were a few differences throughout the game, but the really bad one wasn't noticeable until stage 6 of loop 2: The Arremers are triggered a lot easier in the second loop of this version. This means that pretty much all the stage 6 strats for the U.S. version (including recovering your armor, which you absolutely need) are null and void. Getting perfect luck with the Arremer patterns was my only hope, and in the end I did it. But yeah, a brutal challenge fit only for a mad man. Loop 1 seemed pretty much the same as the U.S. version though.

You are the actiongame king Nightstar!

You forgot one other thing: Japanese version doesn't have continues (just like the arcade version)! How are you practising later stages if you have to restart all the time? I have started playing the USA version (thanks to my Everdrive) just so I can get unlimited continues.

I would also like to know your strategy against the Arremers. Their pattern is too random to get past accurately and if you don't have unlimited continues, the chances to get perfect luck with their patterns through the whole game is very small. I've looked at speedruns of the game and they seem to have trouble too. I always get stuck at the big stairs right before the dragon on the third stage.

Nightstar699

Ah, but the Japanese version *does* have unlimited continues, you just have to use a very simple continue code to use them, similar to the first Adventure Island. I do, however, plan to 1CC the first loop, not even going to attempt 1CC'ing the second loop because just surviving stage 6 of loop 2 requires perfect luck 6 or 7 times in a row - if even just one of those random elements turns against you, (and the odds are DEFINITELY not in your favor) you're automatically dead. So yeah, 1CC of Japanese loop 2 is just impractical and I'm not even going to attempt it, but I think it could very much be done for the first loop.

I actually just got done playing loop 1 again, I used a few continues but it only took me like 30 minutes this time, as opposed to like an hour yesterday. So I'm getting there.

I hear you on the stairs climb of stage 3, that place is pure evil. I do not have a consistent Arremer strategy, I try my best to manipulate their movement and get in hits (usually while jumping backwards) when I can, but sometimes they just don't cooperate.

I see, that's what I do too. I often kill them an inch from Arthur's face. I saw on a youtube video where they walked up until the demon was visible but not more, then threw a knife at it (I heard the weapons all do the same damage so knives are best since they are fastest) and quickly ran away for a bit. Sometimes this despawned them but usually not. Maybe it was mostly to get to a better fighting ground.

Oh so there IS a continue code in the game, didn't know that!
