Only anime I have come to remotely like is Death Note

Anyone watch Kidou Senshi Gundam?

My wife LOVES Gundam, especially the new Gundam 00 series. I could never get much into it. I need more slapstick humor.

I like cyberpunk and ultra-violent 80s anime myself,   Megazone 23, cyborg 009, Cyber City 808, astro boy, bubblegum crisis, AD police, wicked city, monster city, guyver old + new, basilisk, ninja scroll, anything Shirow Masamune -  the list could go on and on!

I'm not all keen on modern teen (naruto/bleach) and 'romantic' anime - I find it all too silly, but the naruto books are good.

I saw the part were Light and Ryuk are in the store and Light tells Ryuk he can't have anymore apples and Ryuk totally imitated FamicomFreak

Oh yeah I got tons more faves but as for Akira, I actually prefer the movie to the book.  Though the book has some amazing illustrations in, I just thought the story went on for way too long.  It's like one big digression!

I also prefer the movie to the manga when it comes to Akira.
In the movie it's the great music and sound in general that makes the difference.

things like the fluidity of the smoke animations, the tail lights on the bikes, along with the music none of that rythum comes across in the manga of course.  Having said that none of the linework from the manga really comes across in the movie and in colour of course.

If you really like it you need to consume and enjoy both the manga and anime anyways.

Did you enjoy Freedom?  I liked the story but the cel shaded visuals were a bit, um, Phillips CDI...
